Display Power Cable orientation

Mid 2011 iMac 27"

When installing an SSD drive, I put too much strain on the Display Power cable socket.

The pins appear undamaged, but I am not sure if the grooves in the socket and small lugs on the plug are still intact and therefore, I could possibly insert the plug either way.

To identify the correct orientation of the plug, I see that a small section of the brass connectors is visible through the plastic on only one side.

I see that these are on the outside (away from the circuit board) on the display end of the cable,

Is it the same on the logic board, i.e. insert the plug with these nearest to you, i.e. away from the logic board?

Any help greatly appreciated

Thanks for interest in my problem.

As I reported, the cable does not lie flat to the plane of the rear of the display, but almost convinces me that my preference for visible brass on one side of plug should be outermost.

Here is my plug and I hope the tiny brass parts of the connectors show up.

Solución Elegida

That cable lays flat against the back of the display. So when you hold the display up to plug the cable in just don't twist it it and it will be in the proper orientation.

That appears to be the LED driver board cable:

Thank you for the suggestion and it almost convinces me but my cable does not lie in quite such a straight line as this. I will try to post picture to demonstrate

Yes, the visible slots should be facing outwards. If you look closely at the sides of the plastic plug-in, you will see a small ridge or nipple. These will be insert guides and allow you to insert plug one way. Use a magnifying glass to inspect and you will see one on each side.

Thanks Mike. I thought I could see the ridges on the plug, but I think I have reduced the size of these and their mating grooves on the socket by putting too much strain on that cable whilst unplugging other connectors.

It remains to be seen, if I have done irreparable damage to the socket, in which case I suppose a new logic board would be required. Thanks again.

As it turns out Apple uses the same connector in the MacBook Pro Unibody series. Here's a better image of the interface:

The contacts are facing you (outwards) and the detents the board clip snags are only on the outside facing side the wire bail is rotated over the connector to clip on its backside.

I think this, like the comment from Dan previously, may be referring to the Screen Display cable and not the Display power cable. The tiny holes with brass showing through from the 6 pins appear on one side of the plug and as the plug goes into the socket vertically, they are either at the front (nearest to the display) or at the back (nearest to the logic board). My feeling is now that they are at the front.

wrong , complete opposite . The brass will look "up" as the cable lies , but when you sit the screen the cable will be inserted upside down. look at the back of the screen ,the short bend is first and will orientate left from the top.

HI david. Having similar probs to you but at both ends of the cable as I am replacing that. I have replaced the board mounted connector (socket!) and it looks devilish to replace, but the problem still exists for me. Does it work with the metal exposed (on tho "up" side facing the observer?
