Drive or revers just shuts off
Hello everyone. I have a problem with my 1989 GMC 1/2 ton p/u... starts good... idling is good... but soon as you put in drive or reverse.. it's shuts off.. restart again .. starts good... then again.. gear in drive or reverse.. shut off again... I replace idle air control valve... still the same.... need help....thank you...

After start will the engine rev up. Do you mean it stalls out no power or engine stops like turning the key off. Will it start I neutral

Start-up good in neutral or Park.. and idle is good as well... but soon as you put in drive ... engine shuts off like you turn the key off... still trying to found out what going on with me working truck...

What about timming gear.. anyone know about that...?

I have been racking y brains as well as looking at the electrical schematic. With the onboard computer controlling things, you could replace about 8 things and it not be any one of them. Timing gear is directly attached to your cam shaft, if loose or skip a tooth it would run rough, backfire, not rev up in neutral.

In Park or neutral the computer knows it is safe to start, will not start in rev or any run position of the shifter. when the engine is running the computer sees oil pressure, alternator. vacuum. rpm sensor. This bridges the safety and allows the engine to run as the shifter is moved to rev or drive. Retaining voltage to the ignition parts. This signal voltage then must be lost. Either a bad sensor or a broken wire. Would the computer reader have it in its memory?
