No signal to monitors. But computer starts up

Hello. So, yesterday I played a game. And somehow the electricity stopped in my room for a few seconds. Then when everything came back on I powered on my computer and got no signal to my monitors. The computer starts up and all the fans are spinning (except for the graphics cards fans). I've tried taking out the GPU and putting it back in, no luck. Also tried disconnecting the power cord, no luck. Even took out the battery on the motherboard (my friend suggested it) But still no luck. I’m afraid that the GPU gave up. But how could that happen? From a power out.. So I turn here. Thanks for your time.

It’s a R9 390X Nitro

Motherboard: Z170 A

CPU: I5 6600K

Does Your computer have embedded graphics? if so, try using it. does it work?

Hi @erikhultgren ,

Can you check the power supply voltage from the PSU that feeds the graphics card?

It may be that there is no power being supplied to the card and that the problem is in the PSU and not the card.

Yeah that would probably make more sense. the fact that the fans are not spinning would indicated to that. But I have found that on a computer without embedded if you insert a GPU into it WITHOUT connecting the 6 pin connector to it, the graphics card itself will not output anything if you plug something into it but the motherboard video output ports will. Plus fans will not spin.

Hi Aiden,

Bit confused by your comment.

First you say " on a computer without embedded" then in the same sentence you say " but the motherboard video output ports will".

Doesn't embedded imply motherboard video out?

Did you mean to say ''with embedded " and not "without embedded" perhaps? ;-)

no thats the part that really confused me :/

hey! i had recently fixed this issue with my GF's computer.

I am unable to discern if it was the Processor or the MoBo, as i had to replace both, due to the age of them, but replacing those fixed the issue.

The motherboard is about 2 years old now. But I’m amazed, from a simple power shortage? How is this possible! And that’s going to cost me a lot. I’m so mad. How!?

(And the processor).. but the computer works if you take out the gpu. So can it really be the cpu or mobo?

your post doesnt say you get an image from on board graphics. i was simply replying to what you asked.

If you get an image from on board graphics, then it is 95% likelyhood to be the GPU. (your GPU fans wont spin until it reaches a certain temp)

A power shortage also causes power Surges. i have been electrocuted to the point of pain from my mouse because of a power surge. that amount of power can cause most definitely fry out ICs, Caps, and other components on motherboards.

it can also be your monitors, or cables, so be sure to test a whole new monitor set up if you have the ability.

there are too many possabilities for just one answer to solve your issue. in a shop, it would go through a trial and error process until the issue is found. my response is simply a a solution i have recently used.

Did you try resetting your PSU?

Unplug power cord, press and hold power button on PC for 30-60 .

Plug in power cord and power on.
