Best adhesive for mounting the iPad Glass to Frame

I am trying to figure out the best way to mount the iPad glass to the frame. I have tried 3M Adhesive and different types of epoxy and nothing seems to work. The main problems I am having with these types of adhesive are that they don't hold. After a while the glass will start to separate from the frame. Any ideas or suggestions please let me know. I will try them all out!

As this is an old question, things change and options become available. I would check with the ifixit parts store: https://www.ifixit.com/Store/iPad, to see if there are pre-cut strips available for your model such as these: iPad 3/4 Adhesive Strips Which are comparable with these machines:

I bought new ipad 2 glass screen for $18, it came with pre-cut 3M double sided glue. I bought extra set of 3M sticky tape for $4 on eBay.

I know this is old, but I have been having the same problems. I have a repair business run out of home, going on two years now.

I have been using permatex brand silicone RTV, the regular "sensor safe" blue kind. Not the "super blue". It comes in a regular blue squeeze tube, not silver (that's the super blue).

You MUST use the sensor safe kind because regular RTV silicone has vinegar in it, and the fumes will corrode metal, and thus corrode electronic circuits, ruining the device.

I have had good results applying just a little bit around the perimeter of the frame. Once the glass is laid down, I clamp it with clothespins all the way around, about 30 clothespins. If you're very careful you should have little or no RTV squeeze out of the edges (and hope to god you don't smear it on the inside of the glass or LCD). I use dentist picks to run between the glass and plastic trim to remove excess RTV, but there will always be a little blue color left by the RTV. This annoys me, and I wish there was a clear silicone RTV that was sensor safe, but no customers have mentioned it. Let it sit 24 hours (another bad thing sicne I am known for fast service, and people don't like not having their device for this long).

Clamping, RTV's lack of sponginess compared to 3M tape, slight variations in the height of the areas the glass sticks too, and thinner glass than OEM will cause the glass to have some waviness to it (it will flex the glass a little bit) but it's not noticeable except at an angle. I have had a problem once with the glass touching the LCD, it was bowed inward slightly. I tugged outwards on it with a suction cup and the visual distortion caused by this touching went away luckily. I'm afraid I may have customers notice this reoccurring over time though. Seems like the replacement glasses are usually thinner, and not tempered as good as OEM. But what can you do?

Hi Brent, I know this is quite old, but I'd like to pick your brain a bit if you don't mind. Would you be able to email me? theboardrid3r@gmail.com

I'd appreciate it. Thank you sir....

Thanks, having an issue with the 3m tape not working also. Going to try this, just ordered some of the RTV blue sensor safe from amazon.

I have the same problem with the adhesives as they can be a bit hit or miss in quality, even the 'real' 3M stuff.

I agree completely with Brent above about the thinner less tempered replacement glass but for a few €£$£€, as above ^^ what can u do?

I repair ipads/phones on the side so have tried different things but this is what I use and do....

I use plastic clamps that you can get from the poundshop (UK), you can 6 for about £1 so two or three packs is more than enough,

https://www.discount-tools-uk.co.uk/imag...

but as Brent said above the glass can set with too much pressure causing an oily-like distortion where it presses on the LCD which can mean removing the glass again (absolute pain in the arse) but a suction cup can help as suggested.

Anyway, long story short I use a mix of adhesives and a good strong glue that doesnt cause any corrosion, clear and easyish to remove plus holds glass well. EVO Stik Serious Glue/Gel

http://i1.adis.ws/i/washford/174543?$pd_...

It's about £5-6 but lasts ages...dont know if its sold in the US though.

I only tend to use it in the trouble areas where the adhesives are quite thin which is by the digitizer cable side. I also put blob to the right of the wifi antenna on the black plastic speaker.

I then hold it for a few hours with the clamps evenly spread around the screen but keep an eye out for the oily distortion.

Only bad point is like most glues it is a complete nightmare if you get a bit on the lcd. ..but cleaned quickly and with proper cleaning fluid will come off.

Like Brents alternative it can dry with a white colour so u need to be careful with how much you use so there is none squeezed out the side between the plastic frame...but it only tends to affect the black ipads...it does come off the glass front reasonably easy with a decent cloth and alcohol.

Hope this helps....and I might have and look for the Permatex RTV and give that a try to compare.

The adhesive that comes pre-installed on most ipad digi's are complete garbage in my experience, however keep in mind it's really the cleaning/surface prep that determines the longevity of the adhesive!

As far as adhesive, the TESA tape from IFIXIT has really improved my repairs. On top of that, I use adhesive remover to get rid of all the left over adhesive on the frame after I scrape the thickest glue off. Once the surface is like new, I give it a good spray of alcohol and clean away residue . Only then do I apply the TESA tape. I take it a step further by using adhesive promoter as well , but this isn't necessary!

Adhering new screens to the frame is a huge problem in this industry (with every device, not just ipad's) and I'm surprised it's so glanced over when people post repair videos

Sorry for resurrecting a 3 yr old thread, but the question is still relevant. The product description for red tape says it's ideal for "Bonding applications where removal is not required".

So what happens if the screen requires removal at some point down the line?

Also, the shelf life of 1 year only is putting me off as I only do around 2-3 devices a year around here. But I do need something stronger than the included adhesive strips, hence looking into options.

You’ll be just fine with red tape. You’ll be better off with a tape that “doesn’t require removal”. Plus You want it to last as long as possible! Most any of these tapes will last a solid amount as long as they’re set properly :) red tape has never failed me.

Hi, I fixed my first ipad and it was (to say the least) a bit messy getting the screen off. I came across this article and was wondering about the adhesive they said the tech used. It's 3M’s Scotch Weld 4799 glue and I was curious if anyone else has used this adhesive? I didn't want to sink money into something that someone else has tried and it didn't work so well. The article link is below:

Thanks in advance!
