Replaced battery, worked fine for day, now won't charge

Someone put a 15 gb 3rd gen Ipod in the recycling bin at work, so I don't know for sure what the problem with it was. I bought a new battery and wall charger on eBay and replaced it myself. As soon as I closed it, it started working fine. There was about half a charge on the battery. I used it for a few hours and then put it on the wall charger overnight. When I tried to turn it on, the Apple logo came on and a picture of a battery with an exclamation point in a triangle, then it shuts down. I tried pressing the menu and play buttons together to reset it, and I opened it up again to make sure the connections hadn't come loose. Any ideas what may be wrong?

Since you were capable of using it for a couple of hours, I seriously doubt that it is installed wrong. First off the 3rd gen needs firewire to charge and does not charge with USB. Your cable may fit and all but USB charging is not supported. So that should be the first part you need to do. The other possibility is that you are having dock connector issues. Clean it out and check that the pins are not bend or corroded. This model iPod is actually a lot less prone to any issues than the models after it. Yes, iTunes supports this model without any difficulties. Hope this will help you all to at least get started. Good Luck

Thank you so very much. I was trying to charge the newly installed battery with usb. I totally forgot about using firewire to charge the battery. Thanks a million.

Ricardo Drozdowski Junior, great job. Just make sure you always back up your files so just in case something should happen to the sentimental devices than you have a backup. Again great job.

tklesse rest assured that iTunes does support it. I use it for all my ipod's from 1st gen to Touch without any difficulty. the issue here is that people do not realize that it is not supported by USB but requires Firewire.
