My system suddenly wont start - at all!

Hi IFIXIT,

The other day my MacBook Pro A1425 shut down it self randomly, 30 minutes later I was able to restart it. The day after I started it with no problem, and it shut down itself again, this time I wasnt able to turn it on again - at all...

I've tried these without any luck

  • Changing chargers (both original, different models)
  • SMC reset, (nothing happens)
  • PRAM reset (nothing happens)
  • Unplug HDD and RAM, and insert again
  • Cleaning it with air pressure
  • Held the power button, 10 sec without chargers and then insert charger at the same time while holding down the power button.
  • Unplug power to battery and trying the same reset options as above.
  • Inserted charger without battery plugged in.

Litterally nothing happens, well the power indicator on my charger turns green for a second, when trying to do SMC reset, and after going back to orange lightning.

I feel I've tried lots of solutions, but nothing seems to happen at all, if you have any idea to help I would appreciate it!!

The Macbook has never been dropped and is without any scratches, could I even sell it for a penny, if the motherboard is faulty xD?

Best Regards, Rottefyren

Update (10/15/2017)

My other, and newer, Macbook Air, just did the same thing!....

What is the chance, it worked perfectly fine yesterday, when I woke up I couldn't start it, seems like the charger of the older MacBook Pro (the one the topic refers to) caused the problem, as I was able to start it by using the charger that came with my MacBook Air after 20 minutes charging... When I tried to update Sierra to High Sierra and had to restart it wouldn't and now it reacts completly like the MBP. Never been dropped or anything like that.

I really hope anyone have an solution. Both are out of fabric warranty....

Update (10/15/2017)

Just opened my Macbook Air for the first time, the one that went off this morning. The Soldered RAM and HDD is burning hot, and the cooler is actually on? Could it be in standby or something?? The Mac seems to be running?

Just to be clear you have a Unibody 13" MacBook Pro correct? The MacBook Pro A1425 is a 13" retina model which has soldered RAM & a blade SSD.

To verify what you have plug in your systems serial number here: EveryMac - Lookup then tell us what you have.

- de

Not quite sure what a Unibody is, but yes it is 13" and has Retina, Soldered RAM and a blade SSD. The Macbook air, which suddenly acting the same as the MBP is a A1466.

- de

The only reason I was confused, you had listed one of your actions was disconnecting the HDD & RAM. Your has a blade SSD and the RAM is soldered in (not removable). I trusted your actions more than your system posting.

- de

Oh allright, i just plugged the power from the HDD & RAM on the motherboard :)

- de

Still makes no sense ?? There is no power feeds for the RAM or SSD. Did you disconnect the battery from the logic board?

OK, You where in the middle of updating your OS on both things maybe not so dire ;-}

You'll need to restart your system and make sure they are still connected to the internet as I suspect you interrupted them during the firmware update process. Depending on your networks speed it could take a bit of time.

As for the MagSafe chargers... Hopefully this is not what did you in.

Lets make sure the chargers are in good shape. First lets make sure you're using the correct one for the different systems: Find the right power adapter and cable for your Mac notebook and review this for each: Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters

If you see any differences stop using that charger/system as swapping the charger could damage your charger or system!

The last shoe to fall here is make sure you've bought a real Apple MagSafe charger! There is a flood of MagSafes hitting the streets again ;-{ It appears Apple has stopped fighting their importation in many countries as they had been doing in years past.

Here's some food for thought! Counterfeit Macbook charger teardown: convincing outside but dangerous inside & Lacking safety features, cheap MacBook chargers create big sparks

Both MagSafes is real. Included when i bought the macbooks and never been replaced. The randomly shut downs on the MBP didnt relate to any update, just while normally surfing. The Macbook Air last night was used to stream and surfing and just couldnt start when i woke up. I only tried updating it while i heard it could be an solution to keep a system up to date. The pins on the MagSafes look completly normal and cleaned.

Hows the chargers/systems connectors look?

- de

Both are original MagSafe 2 adapters. 60w for the MBP and 45w for the Air.

- de

The Macbook Air seems really warm, considered there is no power or charger in it at the moment.. Hmm ?

- de

That doesn't sound good ;-{ I think you'll need to visit an Apple Store or Apple authorized service center. Do it soon as Apple will likely cut the 2012 models from their repairable list. Bring the chargers with you.
