Hi Alw,

The vacuum is likely shutting off because the safety switch is being activated. This can happen when suction is lost or something is preventing the beater bar from rolling. I would suggest flipping the vacuum over and removing the big plastic screws. Clean the beater bar (the cylinder with bristles) and try to see if it fixes the issue.

It works fine including the beater bar when vacuuming the carpet. As soon as you put the vacuum in the resting (upright) position the whole vacuum stops i.e. Starts right back up when you recline the handle. This makes it impossible to use the wand.

It sounds like you may have a clogged hose or a broken selector wheel. Please check the hose for anything blocking it and if it is clear take a look at the video below for the selector wheel.

The beater bar doesn’t spin in the upright position.

I am having same problem with not powering up in upright position, but does and the beater bars works when reclining handle. What did you do to solve problem??The selector wheel video was not available. Did that work ?

I believe that Lacey is correct in saying that the beater bar doesn't spin in the upright position.

I was having the same problem - it would not run in the upright position. After about an hour, I was able to start it in the upright position so it seemed like it was probably overheating. I cleaned the filters and rinsed them out and have not had the problem since.

I have solved this mystery finally! It is all the way in the motor. It’s the carbon motor brush. I replaced EVERYTHING before that, took it apart again, and one of the brushes was worn all the way down, but still barely making contact. However, was not providing enough friction to power it up for full suction power, and when upright, it didn’t have power to switch the upright switch on, so it just turned off completely! These brushes are about $12 for two of them. You need to make sure you order the correct one for your machine. Dc65 takes 120v electro-carbon brushes. If you buy the wrong ones, they will burn out fast causing same issue sooner. Hope this helps!

I’ve solved this issue and posted in above comments. Carbon motor brushes are worn out. Cheap replacements and back in business! The only thing is you have to take every single piece of the vacuum apart to get to the motor to remove the carbon brushes and then you have to remember how to put it all back together so you can if you can manage to do that then you’re only gonna be spending like 10 to 15 bucks to fix it and it’s like its Brand new! I had to take mine apart seven times to figure it out. Ha ha.

Ours is brand new. Used it twice and now it won't work on the upright position. Checked everything mentioned above and there are no blockages.

Can’t use wand when handle us upright. No clogs and beater bar is clean. Unable to get suction through wand. Very frustrating.

Carbon motor brushes have worn down. You gotta remove them from motor to check them. Replace for $10-$15. Took me taking it apart 7 times to figure it out! Not enough power being produced through the brushes rubbing the motor core.
