I changed hard drives, is there anyway I can put snow leopard on the hard drive I was using for my backup even though it was my time machine backup drive or do I need to do a fresh install?

The upgrade should only change the operating system, not your personal files such as your music, documents, photos, etcetera. HOWEVER, you should ALWAYS back up everything before a system upgrade, just in case. I'd recommend using Carbon Copy Cloner to copy your entire hard drive to an external hard drive and then confirm you can boot from that external hard drive. Then if something goes wrong, you have your whole system backed up in a working format.

You should also do some Google searches to see if the programs you use most often are compatible with Snow Leopard. You don't want to be surprised after the fact by having to pay extra money for upgrades to other programs as well.

Cool already did the carbon copy to my external drive but I also wanted to know if I can change my hard drive to my external because it is a 500 gig and then keep my 120 gig as my new external with the original mac os x leopard that was installed on it....

Here's the iFixit guide for replacing the hard drive on this mode: Reemplazo del disco duro del MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo Model A1211

It's not the easiest thing to do, but it's possible. However, your external hard drive may or may not be compatible. I believe the MacBook Pro 15" uses the 2.5 inch wide x 9.5mm tall SATA drives. You'll need to find out what kind of drive is in your external drive to see if it's swappable.

I have done this operation twice on two different machines. The operation itself is easy as long as you follow the procedure. But when I tried to upgrade to snow Leopard I got the message that the hard drive had to be formatted with GUID.....It ment for me that I would have to do a clean install with all the work and struggle that follows.
