What exactly is the backlight on a smartphone display?

I usually piece together to fill in voids in my understanding of things. But, I'm not having any luck dealing with LCDs. All this about backlights, film, mirror...all I know is I can't seem to find anything anywhere to tell me the components of an LCD. I hate to show ignorance, but, could somebody please fill me in? I would really appreciate it. I have yet to get a display apart with the LCD intact. But maybe some day...

Sure thing!

What model screens are you dealing with exactly? Samsung screens for instance are fairly different than iPhone screens

As for your question, the backlight is the component that provides the light source behind the LCD so that you can see it. Without it, the LCD would show an image, but you wouldn't be able to see it since it would be too dark.

Sorry Rick that I didn't get back to you sooner.

So what exactly are you looking to accomplish? It sounds like you're trying to remove Samsung LCD's without damaging them? Maybe you are looking to refurbish cracked glass? This way I can give you the info you need instead of just giving you random information about samsung LCD's

Yes, I'm trying to learn all I can about major components. Samsung LCDs are so brittle. I think I finally got the heat right. Separated a Tab S T800 yesterday. I left my rework station at 150 and it took forever! But I made it. But still, I don't know about what I read...remove the backlight, do the LOCA, solder the backlight back in place...Maybe I should dissect one, then pose and questions to wonderful people that like to help. Thank you for responding.

The one I opened up is a thin sheet of aluminium and a platic coating. Between the two appears to be a film of oil and somewhere inside some leds. I think the idea is that the oil contains some particles to scatter the light from the leds so that the whole device lights up evenly. In addition the oil conducts the heat from the leds to the aluminium sheet to keep them cool.
