Keyboard replacement full teardown? Acer Chromebook 14

Have been unable to find any teardown info regarding keyboard replacement. Do I have to gut the case to get to it or is there an easier way? Such as from the top.

Thanks

I’m guessing that means there is no way since you’ve had no answer? I need to replace mine.... if you found how it would be most useful! Thank you!

Sorry to say I have not. I'm still waiting and using the virtual keyboard but it's very clunky. I have a new replacement and have opened the unit but got stuck at the keyboard ribbon. I can't figure how it disconnects and don't want to destroy it just yet! Hopefully someone will know.

To disconnect the keyboard ribbon: slide the black clip twords the ribbon and it should slide right out of the cream colored portion of the socket.

Well I finally took the plunge, sort of. With the help of my tech savvy son we, (he) completed the replacement of the keyboard. By the way, Acer intended for this to be a non replaceable, one time use keyboard. Anyway, the process is that you have to remove just about everything. The keyboard is in place with plastic pegs that come through from the front of the laptop and are mushroomed in the rear. You have to snip off the mushroomed ends to free up everything and remove the old keyboard. We then installed the new one and because we had snipped off the ends of the pegs, we had nothing to hold things together. So we pressed things firmly together and used a hot glue gun and just dabbed spots of hot glue where the old mushroomed ends were. Worked perfectly! Buttoned it all back up and fired it up. I now finally have a working Chromebook without the wonky virtual keyboard!

Hope this helps somebody! Good luck!

Did you try to find a service manual? That would most likely tell you how to disassemble the device.

I have not been able to locate a service manual nor any video instructions on keyboard replacement for this model.

Based on the limited guides we have on this site for this Chromebook, and a picture of a replacement keyboard on another site, (link here) I would assume that the keyboard is held in with screws around the edge of the keyboard.

These Chromebooks aren't very difficult to disassemble, so removing the guts from your current machine shouldn't be too difficult. Once the motherboard, battery, and possibly the speakers are removed, you can begin looking to see if the keyboard is held in with screws. If it is, you're in luck! Just buy a new keyboard. If it's those little plastic pop rivets, I'm sure you can make do with either remelting a little plastic on each point, or using a little glue. Good luck with the repair!

Thanks, I have the replacement. Just getting up the nerve to tear into it and see. I've been getting by using the virtual keyboard and that's getting really old!

It looks like a simple teardown. I've opened these up before and taken them apart about as far as they can go. I'd say maybe 10 pieces in total. But if it's worrisome to you, you can always use an external keyboard. The only way you'll learn is if you try!

What is wrong with the keyboard?

I might be of assistance considering the fact I'm literally on the same device right now XD

Most keys are dead.

What do you mean by dead? You mean stuck or not working or....

- de

Dead, as in not working. As in you touch and nothing goes to the screen. Electronically dead.

Oh wow...Never had that problem. Thanks for asking the question, though. If I ever have this problem, I'll come back to this thread. +1 vote for question!
