No sound and powering off during calls after screen replacement

Hey everyone. I'm a tad freaking out right now...

I just replaced a screen for someone on the iPhone 7 plus and after doing that, there is no sound, and the phone is randomly rebooting. I checked all the connections and everything carefully and cannot find the problem.

I read a lot about the proximity sensor which everything is where it needs to be, but I have no clue and am freaking out! What should I try??

You placed the foam pads all back? I've read that having the pads damaged or taken off can cause some disturbance.

Yes, all the pads, double sided stuff, etc is all back on the new one. I've never had this happen....I'm literally shaking because I don't know what to tell this person.....they are going to be so mad to have a phone not working.

The other thing is, I can hear sound from the phone when dialing a number, but when I call, there is no sound from the earpiece and then the phone reboots. It only reboots during calls...

I believe I know the problem now....not for sure, but pretty sure......I think the flex cable spread apart where the sticky adhesive is near the lower left corner by the speaker. I didn't realize those were two separate cables stuck together. It makes sense to me because when I make a call the phone has no sound and reboots.......probably from those flat gold points not making the correct contact.

Back again, sorry for the multiple posts........

So, the speaker and proximity sensors don't work, but the FF camera does. Do you think that helps determine the cable is the problem? Because I see that the proximity sensor/speaker terminal cable is separate from the cable that runs the camera to the logic board. I think when I was attempting to pull the cable out to transfer, I think I saw the gold contacts where the two cables a stuck together...

I wanted to update you all that I installed the new flex cable and everything is working now! The stupid proximity sensor gave me fits since the replacement screen didn't have the clear plastic pieces installed and aligned so I had to scratch a bit of the tint off that area and use a flashlight until I could see the sensors and then tighten everything down. What a pain!

So, for anyone who is thinking of replacing a digitizer for this phone and never done it before................buy a full assembly or purchase a flex cable along with a digitizer only replacement, just in case! Thanks everyone for all the help. Y'all are awesome!

Alright first just relax. I know these are high pressure situations, but you got this! And we're here to help. This is not the first time this has happened to an iPhone 7 Plus. Extremely common. Keep in mind, to save your sanity, that you should be able to use the broken original assembly, and things should go back to normal. The problem is likely in the part that you're using. This has happened to me. A part that will work on the next phone, won't work on this one. It's kind of like an organ transplant, that the patient is rejecting. If you can't sources other part that works. Then put the oldie back, apologize to customer, and soldier on. This isn't your last repair. If you need anything else. Come back. We'll be here to help

Thanks for the encouragement. When I called the customer I wasn't sure what the problem was, and now I'm positive it's the cable. I remember when I was peeling it up from the corner adhesive, I'm pretty sure I saw gold color and then I peeled from a different angle. That was most likely the tearing of the two cables at the solder point. And because the FF camera works (it's the only one that is connected to the cable that goes to the logic board) and the Prox Sensor/speaker don't work (and making calls that activates the earpiece causes the phone to reboot), I feel like that definitely means I jacked the cable up during transfer....first time for everything, right?

I ordered another cable with a 100% money back guarantee so hopefully it works and I can calm down.

Even if can't calm them down. You must be like a duck. On the surface of the water the duck is calm. Under the surface the feet are constantly moving! Don't worry. There will be these days. I like to welcome the obstacle now. You know it will come @mwc104

Great suggestion! Our shop has replaced screens on well over 50 iPhone 7s, and I'm sure there's about to be a lot more with the announcement of the 8/X with people wanting to trade in. I can tell you from my experience that the cable(s) that run the FF camera, Prox sensor, and Ear Speaker are two flex cables that are barely soldered together it seems like. I try to keep a stock of replacement flex cables just in case this happens.

I've had boot loops caused by these two cables and the easiest way to test if it's a screen issue, or an issue with that cable (which can look completely fine at a glance) is to just disconnect it and see if the phone still loops, or if it boots okay.

The best method I've found to avoid this issue is a LITTLE heat to loosen the glue, and grasping the cable at the solder point where the two flexes join to put a little pressure on the cable and a spudger to dislodge the individual components from the screen.
