Microphone replacement still not working

Hi,

So my son's iPad mini 2 microphone suddenly stopped working. No physical or liquid damage although it did get dropped a few times in its Otterbox case from waist height. I did the usual troubleshooting steps to eliminate if the issue was software related. When using the 3.5 mm headphones the iPad works fine. Ordered the iPad mini 2 microphone and tools from iFixit to replace the microphone using ifixit repair guide. I followed the guide to the letter. Unfortunately, the microphone is still not working. I've asked iFixit to send me another replacement microphone just in case the one I got was defective. Plan to use the replacement microphone but in the meantime anybody have advice or tips on what I should do or someone ran into a similar situation?

Thanks!

Solución Elegida

Sorry for the late reply, I just saw this.

The most likely solution is a new replacement microphone as small parts such as these tend to have a higher defect rate than replacement screens. However, if the replacement microphone hasn't arrived yet or hasn't solved your problem, I would start by looking at the microphone hole in the housing to see if there is any dust or lint that is causing obstructions. You can clean it with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol.

The other thing that could have happened is accidentally prying small components while disconnecting the camera. The camera connector (see Step 49) has several small (tiny) components surrounding it. One of them is critical to the proper operation of the microphone. You will need to do a (preferably magnified) visual inspection of the area. I have highlighted it in the picture below.

Finally, what concerns me is your comment that the iPad has fallen more than once from waist height. iPads, even less than phones, are not meant to be dropped. They are heavier than phones and will hit the ground with much greater force. The surface mount components on the logic board can be damaged from these impacts and occur in unpredictable ways. It is possible that some components were jarred loose or cracked the solder balls/joints.

If there are missing or partially dislodged components or the replacement microphone did not work again, then you will need to have your iPad looked at by an experienced micro-solderer.

Minho, thank you very much for your reply. What you said made sense. Luckily I managed to install the replacement iPad mini microphone that iFixit sent and to my relief IT WORKED! Just my luck my fist time repairing an iPad had with a defective new part. So the replacement did the job. The repair isn't easy but isn't impossible either. Just need to use common sense and a lot of patients.
