How to know if iPhone parts are genuine?

Hello everyone :).

I dropped my iPhone 3GS and smashed the screen. The LCD is fine so I decided to buy a touch screen + digitizer and try to repair it myself.

I've had a look around eBay, and a few other websites including this one.

My question is, since I don't live in USA, postage is quite expensive for me, so I was wondering if there was a way to know if the parts I'm buying over here in Spain are authentic?

I don't want to repair my iPhone with a bad quality screen and end up with problems in the future.

Thanks a ton :)

Postage to Europe from some HK sellers is free on eBay. Try looking on uk sites too.... They often ship across the sea cheaply

Craft, I think just like anything else that you purchase, it is very hard to determine if it is an OEM part. I have seen Apple parts that were a total fraud but had all the original markings and stamps on it. So it is difficult to say for sure what part you get. As a general guideline, I purchase OEM parts from reputable dealers and know where to purchase inexpensive copies when it does not matter to much if it is original or not. Usually if a deal is to good to be true, it usually is :) So I do not expect to purchase good quality items for cheap. I hope this makes sense and provides a little bit of guidance.

Any particular markings to spot cheap immitations or any reputable dealers or eBay sellers you recommend?

Thank you very much :)

Here's a dealer with a very good reputation, I am not an employee but I do buy from them. Here's the parts they have for your iPhone: http://www.ifixit.com/iPhone-Parts/iPhon...

Oldturkey is spot on. Oem/ hongkong/china imports are made to look like the real deal. If you want genuine then pay apple to repair. Living outside the US is no reason to think it's costly to post etc. eBay is a great place to source parts- use the feedback scores, most times delivery from HK is free and I get things within 1 week to uk!!

Ifixit thrive on reputation and are not in the business of selling goods that are going to harm their reputation, Mayer has put a good link there!

Mayer, I know ifixit has a great reputation, but I think that paying the amount the item is worth also on postage is a bit too high for me, the iPhone 3GS Front Panel is 34.95 and postage is $35.

So HK parts are pretty much identical quality-wise to genuine apple parts?

I've seen in eBay there's quite a difference between prices for those parts in particular.

Thanks a lot for your time :)

When I installed my cheap digitizer I didn't even notice a difference in the touch screen. The only difference for me is that the glass isn't gorilla so it isn't anywhere near as strong

In brick and mortar shops, it easy to identify if the apple replacement parts are original. But when you're online, make sure to only buy on authorized re-sellers by reading some reviews first before purchasing.

As usual, genuine apple iPhone repair parts are used, not brand new. Because it was from used machine.

There are some genuine parts are brand new, but it is little quantity.

OEM wont' be necessary good for 2 reasons:

1:/ you will never know if it's a guenine or fake

2/ you will find (many) "brand news" EOM battery that will have many cycle on it (800 is common).

You should not focus necessary on OEM but good quality. And the best way to know that, is to count on the reputation. Look for the review, not of the seller, but of the battery itself. It's not 100% safe of course, but much better than anything else.

And of course, don't trust the review posted on the manufacturer or seller website. Common sense.

Look for them on independent review website (trustpilot seems to make some money by not publishing bad comment, but their should be honest website around)

Inn my opinion it's better to get a battery marked as "replacement" (at least you know) than a so called OEM at a same review level. Because the guy who produce the fake OEM won't attach his name/reputation on the item (obvioulsy). But the "replacement" battery brand will be shown, and the manufacturer/seller count on its reputation to make money.

Reputation is everything in business (it's a basic principle of evolution by the way)

**and post an (external) review each time you buy a bad (BUT ALSO A GOOD) item,**
