iPhone stuck in boot loop when front camera is connected

I fixed the broken camera lens of my brothers iphone 7. I opened the phone and unplugged the back camera. Removed the lens and replaced it with a new one. I didn’t remove the screen assembly. So far so good. After putting the camera back and closing the phone it kept showing the Apple logo and turning off. Endlessly.

After hours of frustration I noticed the phone would boot correctly by unplugging the front facing camera ribbon. So I turned it off again and connected the ribbon to be sure. And yet again the phone got stuck in a boot loop. I Unplugged the front facing camera flex cable and got it running again..

I did not touch this connector with the repair. And I was very careful. I fixed a lot of iPhones but this seems very strange to me. I can’t find the problem.

With the phone on I noticed the 3D Touch and home button/Touch ID are also not working. This is a different ribbon cable to my knowledge and too much of a coincidence. Also a connection that’s untouched by me or anyone else. Can someone point me in the right direction? I don’t know where to go from here.

Many thanks! :)

Despite being careful, you may have damaged the flex cables. I would inspect them visually, preferably using magnification, to see if there are any tears, even the smallest ones. The FCAM/Sensor flex is especially prone to tears given its twist.

For the Home Button, I would look at this question (iPhone 7 home button not working after screen replacement) and Rany's answer for more info.

Thanks for your answer! I think this fact from your url explains the fcam/sensors cable effect on the home button:

"FACT 7: some repair techs noticed that a damaged front cam assembly can interfere with the functioning of the Home Button/Touch ID. To rule out this possibility, test the Home Button + Touch ID functions after disconnecting the front camera flex cable."

I'm replacing the sensor flex cable to find out :)

I have had the EXACT problem. Look at your camera FPC camera connection and make sure there isn't any damage to it. The customer I had tried to repair their phone before I got it, so they stretched that camera flex cable too far when opening it, I believe. When I inspected the FPC camera connection, it was slightly scarred.

I will inspect the cable, this could be the problem. Those tri point screws prevented the removal of the display assembly. I will not make this mistake a second time and ordered a new toolkit. Thanks for the help!

Did you also have the homebutton/touch id/3d touch problem? And was this fixed automatically after replacing the front camera connection?

I actually replaced the screen and closed it up. Everything was working well, then the next day it starts randomly boot looping. After disconnecting the front camera connection it booted fine, however I still didnt have home button functionality. I tried another screen to rule out the home button cable that runs under the plate and still no home button. I tried a new front camera and I get the same result, so I feel like the issue for me is the FPC camera connection.

Here is another interesting article about the boot loop issue. You may try this.

Earpiece does not work after screen replacement

So even if you replace the front camera it'll still have the boot loop issue?

- de

David, yes. The issue is the FPC connection. I am sending it off to have the FPC connector replaced.

Mine as the same issue too but if go to fix the fpc connector will the home button start working and it won’t stay on the apple logo again
