iBook shuts down then I have to reset the date and time

hi, my ibook shuts down after 10 minutes or so then when i do power back up i have to go and reset the time and date stamp. I bought a new charger and adapter, i reset the PRAM and all that good stuff and it continues to do the same thing. After reading a lot of similar problems I think i might have to replace the dc-in board? Just want some confirmation before i buy the dc.

thank you,

edie

1- Have you tried running this iBook without the battery ?

A defctive battery cell could possibly cause DC overload.

2- Possibility of a defective fan inside the iBook.

3- If you open it, also consider changing the PRAM battery to solve the date and time isue.

Update

4- Have you had a chance to try an other power adapter ? If you try an other one, make sure it has the same power (or higher) as the original.

5- Most computers are equipped with an inside cooling fan to prevent overheating (yours definitely has one); is your fan running after a few minutes ? If not, perhaps it is jammed or it has a heat sensor issue. This can also shut down your computer after a few minutes.

6- As for the PRAM battery, sorry for misleading you earlier, I just read in an other article that iBooks G3 and G4 don't have PRAM battery, so if your battery is dead, you will loose parameters like date and time.

yes, i actually bought a new adapter with the same voltage as the original. I also checked on the fan, as it was powering on, i heard it go off not even 1 minute and it shut down. but i opened it and it look fine, nothing seem to be blocking and it looked burn free. Any other suggestions? Is it going to be me replacing the dc in- board?

Download iStat Pro (google it), it's a very handy dashboard widget to observe fan speeds, themps and other things. Great for troubleshooting.

Have also a look at the System Profiler (Apple -> About your Mac -> More Info) and look under the power section for the state of your battery and charging. You can also download "Coconut Battery" (again, google it) for more comprehensive information about the state of your battery.
