Surface Pro screen popping out of the chassis

I've been using my Surface Pro intensivily for about three years, most of times doing intensive tasks that generate a lot of heat, which would explain the problem.

It seems like the glue that holds the screen in place is starting to let go, so the screen is starting to pop out in the bottom right corner

So, my question is, what is the best way to put it back in place?

I thought about using double sided tape, but I don't think the space is big enough to actually put it there safely.

I've also thought about using some kind of glue or adhesive, but I'm not really sure about exactly what and how.

Here's a picture of how it looks like:

Thank you.

Is there a lawsuit about this issue? Since this is a safety issue, Microsoft should be held liable for product liability. Thanks

- de

I had the Surface Pro 4 battery expand so much that it lifted & broke the screen. Microsoft would not repair or exchange it. So, I do not thing they will be aggreeable to be liable for a screen jus lifying off.

- de

Those of you who were able to obtain a replacement, please share number to Microsoft… I have a Surface Pro 4 given for me to use by my school district. I am hoping I can get it replaced.

- de

How much did it cost you guys to get your surface replaced even though it's a known issue? I am on a VERY VERY limited budget and have NO way to pay for another surface 3 =/

- de

There was a law suit & they extended the warranty to 3 years instead of the usual one year. My screen exhibited similar symptoms. Flicker, discoloration and slight bulging. I ignored it. Finally I came across an article about these issues and contacted Microsoft. It was 3 years and one month after the purchase. So Microsoft refused to replace my computer. My computer was registered with them and they had all the contact information with them. They said they will replace my computer with another refurbished on for $750! Now another 4 months have passed and the screen has completely has come off on two sides. It appears the battery is at fault. Probably it is leaking and bloating inside and could even explode. Now I have got myself a new laptop I have decided to de-assemble the surface (only two sides need to be unglued) and take photographs of the inside and send them to Consumer Protection Agency hoping that they will issue a mandatory recall of this defective and dangerous product.

None of the ABOVE!!! It means the battery is expanding and it is dangerous. Contact Microsoft… they are aware of this issue and will replace it.

Do you have a link that shows they are aware of the issue?

- de

Hello, I have the link. They are aware. They exchange surface 4 only if it is not older than 3 years. after that, they only exchange it for a surface 5 for 600 Euro. I also think that it is not ok that a company knows about a technical error on a whole production line and does not tell their costumers about it. I did ask my lawyer to look into it.

- de

If it is more than three years after purchase they will not

- de

Then what is the %#*@ link?????????

- de

Their answer we don't repair it and instead we will sell you something else at a reduced price. That really sucked - I purchased a different brand product

I suggest putting it in a hot car until its really hot, like you can barely pick it up. then slide a very thin piece of plastic around the edges and take the whole screen off. (I did my 1st gen surface pro this way. ) Refer to the disassembly guide or tear-down to make sure you don't damage the cables. (for the first gen, separate the sides and top with the plastic card (you want something thinner than a credit card actually, like perhaps a piece of a milk jug or water bottle) Then til the screen up along the bottom edge. Do it SLOWLY and a little at a time and the glue along the lower edge will separate. Also, once the screen is free, let the laptop cool COMPLETELY before undoing the plastic clips that hold the FPC cables down.

When hot its easier to break them. CAREFULLY clean off the old adhesive. Its a job that will take a few hours. Don't rush it or you will damage something. Use some 3M 9448A black double coated tape to put the screen back down. This will result in a much more professional and permanent repair than gobbing liquid glue in the gap and smooshing it down. While your in there, you will likely want to replace the solid state drive. A 250GB samsung msata (for first and second gen units) or m.2 (for 3rd and 4th gen units) can be had for around 80 dollars. A 450GB drive can be had for around 130-150 these days. Since your in there, you might as well do the upgrade since once you put it back together there is a good risk of damaging it if you take it apart again.

Remember though, ANY time you take apart things like these tablets, there is a risk of something going catastrophically wrong. If you have deep scratches on your screen for example, don't even try it, or it WILL break. (right at the scratch) Another problem is the fpc cables that connect the screen. The battery has to be connected when you assemble and disassemble it. As such, if one of the FPC cables is crooked going in or out of its socket, it will short out and you will let the magic smoke out and that will be the end of your tablet.

This is a photo of my Surface with the screen separating from the frame. Microsoft said it was not under warranty and “We recommend that you discontinue use of the faulty device and purchase a replacement Surface .” I believe the reason they recommend discontinue use is the possible fire hazard. Microsoft site includes a screen separation in their list of problems. They are certainly aware of the defect but are not willing to correct it.

Response from Microsoft regarding defective bulging battery

"As I have outlined in my previous emails, your device has been discontinued. We no longer have any support options available, paid or otherwise. I am not able to provide any exchange offers for your device.

We recommend that you stop using the device and dispose of it per your local electronics waste regulations."

It's a sad day when that's the extent of Microsoft's desire to fix a situation that they created.

Facts. I just called Microsoft and they are replacement my Surface that was also out of warranty. I bought my Surface in 2017. The person I spoke to was very nice. All I had to do was take a picture of the screen and a picture of the serial number and upload to Microsoft. The operator waited with me the whole time. After that he escalated the issue and then came back on the phone. I have to return my Surface in a box they will provide and they will send me a replacement.

This process is new. I called last year and was told I would need to pay for a new Surface but they would give me a huge discount.

- de

T Williams - do you have the service number that you called? I am having the same issue.

- de

Yes please share the number/website where you started this process. Thanks!

- de

i just called today 2/7/2020, and i am told that they discontinued the surface pro 3 and don't have any hardware to make repairs what so ever! i was advised to get a new model which comes with better specs and all that, and it was about time to upgrade anyway! yeah! like i don't know. give me 90% off the new one then.

Sadly I have the same screen issue. This is it, I have reached the end of the line with my Surface Pro 4, or any other surface device. I'm not buying surface ever again. Beautiful device and specs are quite decent, did well by me for 2 years. Then the microsoft type cover stopped working, and after much hassle I ended buying another brand's bluetooth keyboard that is working until today. Then the battery started to act funny, wouldn't hold a charge, would last less than an hour and would deplete even after complete shutdown. After a few updates it got better, though battery performance never went back to optimal. Now this screen issue just showed up, which I thought would be fixable in some way, but it seems its the final death sentence to my device.

This is supposed to be a premium device

I use B7000 liquid glue. Works well.

Basically put some glue under the glass, use tape to secure it into place and apply pressure.

Glue will take some time to set. Minimum 30 minutes.

Easy to rub off the excess glue too.

[assuming your battery is also bulging as was mentioned:] try making an appointment and walking into a microsoft store with it and talking to an expert. We did this and they replaced the unit (although it was out of warranty) because it’s a safety issue (their words). It was actually great service!

How long was your computer out of warranty for? Did you say anything specific or did they bring it up that it was a fire hazard danger issue. What did they replace it with? Thanks

Guys, if you have screen popped out, using glue won’t fix anything, the issue is the battery most of the case, it turns bad and is getting swollen, eventually it would push the screen out. I have three surface books, two of them showed the same issue, one has swollen battery in the screen part, I just replaced the battery, result showed pretty good as new. The other one likely having issues for both base and screen, I am going to buy batteries and replace both to see how it goes.

Which Surface version? Was the battery replacement task easy enough?

- de

@dpapini Both Surface books I have issues are version 1, the battery I just replaced is for the screen part, I haven't done anything for the other one which likely needs batteries for both base and screen. Tearing down the screen might be a little bit challenge, but mine screen has been popped out from one side, so I didn't have much trouble to take it off. Other challenge would be to take off the battery, my batter swollen and changed shape badly, it didn't take me much effort to take it off either, rest is just matter to remove the screws so the circuit board would be lose enough to remove the battery(you don't need to remove the board completely). Suggest to watch a youtube clipp to get the idea....

- de

@dpapini you might need some good tools, for me since I keep breaking my cell phone screens, I changed it couple times already, so I have tools to do all these stuffs. it took me about an hour to replace the battery, easy or not would be depending on people I guess.

- de

@jameskan Thanks! I'll give it a try

- de

Good luck, but shouldn't be that complicated, I got a surface book 3 after having these troubles. Later I decided to see what's going on for these old surface books and figured out it is the battery, the battery expanded like a balloon when I opened one screen, I assume no matter which version, at a certain time you would probably start to see this issue, so if you could replace the battery, it would save you lots of dollars.

Moral of the story: class action lawsuit

- de

I got three Surface books( first gen), two of them have screen popped out, one is dead completely and one is still working but randomly losing power, the third one is still there working ok. Unbelievable these laptops are like a rubbish for the price. Bought Surface book 3 recently, can't image it may have the same issue!?

Loved my Surface 3 until after 3 years it’s started looking boated. Quickly it began showing like a tablet in its 3rd trimester. I know know it cannot be fixed, but that the battery is expanding and it needs to be safely destroyed. Sadly, since Microsoft has evidently not corrected this faulty construct, I will be replacing it with another product.

Was still working and took mine in to repair / replace the battery and now it is DEAD. Heart breaking because it was over a Grand new. I agree this should be a class action suit, since they all fail and microsoft is unwilling to take responsibility for their poor design & materials.

I can’t agree more, same issue happens to different models, no matter old or new. The battery I pulled out expanded like a full balloon and it could explode. My other surface book showed bending from both base and top. this is a common issue, I can’t believe why Microsoft doesn’t take responsibility. These devices are not cheap...

- de

There WAS a class action suit against Microsoft on this. Then Microsoft agreed to extend the warranty to THREE years. The class action was dropped. But the extension of warranty was kept a secret. Even though my Surface was registered with Microsoft and they had all my information they never informed me. My screen started bulging too. When I contacted Microsoft it was a bit late (about a month after three years) they refused to honor the warranty. I had to replace mine but this time I bought an HP laptop as I was worried the battery could be fire hazard (I could see the bloated battery through the bulging screen. They should be sued again.
