Yes, but you really want to use Migration Assistant it will make the job much easier.

Here's a bit more on how it works: Move your content to a new Mac While the instructions are a bit vague you can also use it when upgrading a hard drive.

You'll want to get a 16 GB USB thumb drive and an adapter like this: Startech 2.5" SATA to USB adapter Follow this to setup your installer drive: How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive. Put your new drive in then use the OS installer to boot up your system install a fresh OS onto your drive and do any needed updates at the end of the install process you'll be asked if you want to migrate your stuff over from a second Mac. Here we'll use your old drive connected via the adapter cable to recover your stuff.

But before you install your new drive make sure it's compatible!

Your system only has a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) port so you'll need a drive that runs at this speed. Review your new drives spec sheet if you don't see SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) listed you'll need a different drive.

Here's the IFIXIT guide to install the drive MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2010 Hard Drive Replacement. You may also want to replace your HD cable as well as they tend to breakdown while you're at it. Here's the IFIXIT guide for that: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2010 Hard Drive Cable Replacement

Hi,

I have the same machine and recently installed an SSD. I used an external hard disk to transfer all information. What worked best for me was to make a clone of my existing hard to the external drive and then clone it back to the SSD once installed.

I used Carbon Copy Cloner and it worked like charm.

Let me know if you need more detailed guide on how to do it.

Best,

Martin

Hold that thought! CCC has issues rebuilding the recovery partition! While a bit slower. Using the OS installer following this guide: How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive and then using Apples Migration Assistant is by far the safest way to go.
