Is this RAM compatible with my machine?

Hello there!

I have a iMac 20" 2. 16GHz with 1GB RAM & 250GB HD Model No. A1207

I've got the PC2-5300 2 GB RAM Chip in order to replace the current dual 512MB bank so leaving one slot empty. Once inserted the new RAM (by following the iFix suggestions) my iMac starts but the screen remains black. Then I tried to fill the empty slot with one of the two 512MB but the result was the same. Of course the iMac is working once I reinstalled the native RAM's.

My questions for you, is the PC2-5300 2 GB RAM Chip compatible with my machine? In case yes, should I get another bank (same as PC2-5300 2 GB RAM Chip) because the slot mustn't remain empty?

Es esta una buena pregunta?

You have a few possible issues here:

First I would put the original RAM back in and then access this: About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers You want to make sure your systems firmware is up to date.

The next issue is your system can only support 3 GB per Apple but 3rd parties have found 4 GB will work. So you might want to test with just one 2 GB module. The system does not need to have both slots filled to run.

You should stick with the correct frequency in this case: 667 MHz PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM (200-pin SO-DIMM). It needs to be unbuffered as well as nonparty RAM. So double check what you bought.

Keep in mind your system can only go up to Lion (10.7.5) as it can't run 64bit services or apps (EFI is only 32bit). So you do need to be careful! As Apple is no longer offering security updates and Safari services may not work properly with newer web sites.

Thanks a lot Dan for your reply! Very useful.

I'm sure I've bought this RAM based on the information I've got from iFix referring to my iMac model.

Well, I am going to check the firmware then I try to install 10.7.5 version and cross fingers...

I'll keep you updated on that.

Thanks again for your support.
