How to contact apple about factory reset OS update on moved iMac.

Hey there,

I received an old Early 2009 iMac 2.66 20" - MB417LL/A - iMac9,1 - A1224 - 2266 from a friend.

He gave it to me as it is slow and he did't have use for it any longer.

I decided to take it, upgrade it and see if I could out it to good use, I mean c'mon!

So. I moved from Switzerland to Spain with the iMac. Got to my place, set it up and did a factory reset.

I got the request for a Apple ID login.

I figured out needed his original ID which I got and tried and was told that I could only update/restore in Switzerland and that 'this product is not available in your country' being Spain.

So. Now I am having a tough time getting a clean answer from Apple as to what to do.

I was hoping some good soul here might now the resolution to my dilemma.

Many thanks!

- Michael

The message that the recovery shows you is a little bit tricky. It shows you "This item is not available in your country" does not mean this iMac is not available in your country, the real meaning is "the macOS version that you attempt to install is not available in the app store." As you said, it's a 2009 iMac, the system recovery will always attempt to reinstall Mac OS X 10.6 Lion, which is removed from the Mac App Store for years. (Apple's bad tradition: remove old version OS when a new version is available). But Apple is not that bad yet, they offer an option to create a bootable usb to reinstall your iMac. You can follow this guide from Apple.

Sadly Michael will need find a friend with the El Capitan OS-X. The highest this system will run is El Capitan (OS-X 10.11.x) it won't run anything newer. When Apple retires a system it also kills off the OS support which is why you won't find it on the Apps Store.
