No network service available

My wife's Mega has a problem that I cannot find a fix for so I thought I would ask fellow fixers to see if any one else has had it. Sometimes when she picks it up to make a call, it displays a circle with a line through it where the bars normally are. It also displays for a couple seconds when she hangs-up.

This is her second Mega and both of them behaved this way. Attempting a fix, I have flashed it with a clean stock ROM. In case you haven't tried, finding the stock ROM for this rascal is like trying to win the lottery. I also replaced the SIM card just in case. That was not the case.

So, if anyone out there has seen this occur out there in the wild, and will be willing to tell me the fix, my appreciation up to and including the rest of my life. I will even invite you to the celebration party.
