Keyboard replacement is the back-light separable?

Folks,

My keyboard hasn't suffered spill damage but I do have a couple of keys "S" and "R" that are getting less and less sensitive than the rest of the keyboard. I'm suspicious it's just worn out.

If I don't hit the s key squarely or with a bit of extra force the keystroke isn't registered.

I've tried rudimentary clean under the key stuff but no change. There's a slightly more invasive "canned air" and x-acto knife fix I haven't tried but I'm not so sure it's a viable solution if the issue is wear.

Now I've seen plenty of replacement keyboards with and without backlight.

My keyboard is backlit.

My question is, can I buy a non-backlit keyboard and use my existing backlight or are these units bonded together and I need to buy a backlit keyboard as a replacement?

Any advice appreciated.

Which macbook pro do you have? There are tons of models with backlit keyboards.

Thanks for responding Cam.

Macbook Pro Mid-2012 15". I'm not so concerned about which model keyboad. I can work that out. My question is do you have to buy a backlit keyboard of can you buy any (correct model) non-backlit keyboard and use your existing back light matrix? Are keyboards and backlights bonded units or are they separate parts and you just replace the broken part? Hope that clarifies my question.

If it's the A1278 model housing I'm thinking about then the keyboard and backlight layer are separable.

Pretty much stuck on together with light adhesive.

Just need to be careful when separating not to rip the black backlight part (Hint: It goes together with the transparent plastic).

Around 40-50 screws just for the keyboard haha.

Backlight sheet should be okay to use just gotta replace the keyboard and put that behind and align it into place.

Peel the backlight layer away from the keyboard slowly, go from right to left using the edges if you want to peel the adhesive carefully.

Thanks Ben. I was working on the idea it's a A1278. I've seen some stories that the keyboard is riveted in. Is this something you only know once you get in or was it limited to specific models?

Every A1278 does not have riveted in keyboards, just screwed in.

Only the newer Macbook models e.g Air's and not a1278 may have it.
