My husband plugged it in and it popped and produced a little smoke.... Can I be fixed?

Open it up and take images of the inside. That will allow me to pick out the broken component, hopefully.

Sure it can be. The most likely villain is an exploded capacitor. Look for expanded tops, leakage and/or burned spots on the backside of the board.
