What is the first layer under the glass of the LCD?

I was doing a specialty repair on an iPhone 6 screen - glass only. It is a very challenging repair, and I managed to peel off a little bit of the first layer under the glass. Can someone tell me what this is, and what it does? I assume it is the digitizer, but I don't have a phone to test that.
