@eddard ,Jobob , Since I do not know your exact model #, I will post some what generic answer to your issue. If the belt is the correct size and in good condition(not stretched or worn thin), the problem will be the belt retainers bent/missing/ or adjusted too far from the pulleys allowing belt to fall off. Check that the rear end has not slid ahead(broken mount) allowing belt to be excessively loose, check for badly worn pulleys and that the belt tensioner is working correctly(if equipped), belt guides/retainer/guard to far from pulley's or missing is the usual problem. Good luck. I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

adjusted all the retainers... belt came off in 5 minutes.. so I suspect it is a worn out belt as it has been on the mower for some time...thanks

@eddard,Jobob, Thanks for replying back, retainers/guides should only be about an 1/8" away from pulley's after new belt installed, good luck with your mower.

belt works now very well. Now the engine runs for aprox 5 minutes then shuts down. Like out of gas but it is not. I thought carb may be defective so I changed the carborator with another one and it does the same thing. It will run again in several hours of waiting. Will sometime run for 30 seconds or so if you do not wait the several hours. It is a Briggs 17 HP OHV 2000 model riding mower. Suspect something getting hot???? Any ideas... Thanks.. Jobob

Jobob, You can try loosening the gas cap and see if it's not venting properly, vent hole in cap could be plugged. If no go, next time it stalls pour/spray 1/2 to 1 ounce of fresh fuel directly in the carburetor, if it starts and runs until added gas depleted it is a fuel issue, bad fuel, clogged filter(in tank screen if equipped), pinched fuel line, faulty fuel pump (if equipped), faulty fuel shut off solenoid, dirty carburetor, etc., gas should flow when line removed from carb or if equipped with fuel pump when engine turned over gas should flow, if it does problem is in carb's settings, plugged or faulty shut off solenoid. If engine did not start when fuel was added, remove spark plug and ground out on metal engine and check for spark, no spark could be faulty plug, weak/bad coil, ignition module, plug wire, wire grounding out, faulty ignition or safety switch acting up, etc.. Good luck with your mower.

Wow... lots of options... I did the gas cap thing... changed the entire carburetor... fuel flows well.. did the spark check...weird thing is it will run for a while then shut off... will restart but only for 10 seconds or so... but will run again for 10 minutes or so if let stand for a few hours... sounds like something is getting hot and shutting the engine down... ?????????

thanks

The most common problem with engines stopping after a longer warmup of 6-15 minutes is just a bad plug.

Resistance builds up in the electrode until electricity simply cannot pass through.

The next most common thing is a bad ignition coil. This part already has your plug wire already attached.

This happened to me. The answer was that I had a short in the wires which control the flow control needle in the bottom of the carburetor fuel bowl. I replaced the original electrical plug on either side with a plug commonly used for wiring aftermarket lights. This fixed my problem. There are videos which can assist you in diagnosing this particular issue.
