White screen of death?

Hi all. I have a 17" macbook pro, 2011 model with an i7 processor.

I am having troubles starting it up. When i start it up normally it starts to a flashing folder because i stupidly erased the HDD thinking that was the problem. I have tried loading internet recovery and the globe appears, i enter my WiFi password and then after a few minutes an apple logo appears but shortly after the screen flashes black and then goes to a white/grey screen and just stays there.

I'm thinking it's a GPU fault but im hoping that there may be a brain box out there with an easy fix for me!

Thanks in advance

Update (04/12/2017)

I have tried resetting the pram and smc

Yeah resetting those things don't matter when you have erased the Drive. When you erased how did you go about doing so? Did you reformat the Drive? Do you have a installer with an OS on it?

It most likely is a GPU fault. You might be able to TEMPORARILY revive it by heating the GPU (with a heat gun or by putting the board in an oven, sort of like a reflow), but the issue will return since the problem is in the GPU itself, not in the solder balls that attach it to the board. Apple had a recall program for this very issue, but it expired last year.

That being said, you might be able to get it fixed for free by taking it to an Apple Store, if the staff there are feeling particularly generous.

Thanks for your help! I suspected a GPU fault. Is it possible for me to phone apple to see about a repair instead of going all the way to the Apple store?

I have been quoted £150 for a GPU change and the guy insisted that it wasn't just a reball so I'm seriously considering this as an option.

Yep, you should be able to just phone, but you will probably have a lower chance of them agreeing to anything (it is pretty low already though).

Apple will probably turn you down now on the free fix, but you may luck out.

I had my (late 2011) MBP fixed in late 2016, the replacement part lasted 9 months and it's dead again. Apple wants $500 for another repair.

Does anybody buy these things for parts? Nice hi-res matte screen, nothing else wrong with it according to the Genius who did the tests. Just the usual video board failure they never were able to completely fix.
