Microwave when door is shut is turning on by itself without me asking

My Kenmore under cabinet microwave is not working properly. I reset clock and when I shut door I hear a humming noise? I put a glass full of water in it and after 10 seconds or so I open door and water is boiling? I never turned on microwave but when I shut door seems to run automatic? I had to unplug it for safety reasons

Hi @mycatginger ,

What is the model number of the microwave?

Is the turntable rotating and the light and fan also coming on 'automatically' as well or just the humming noise?

Hi Jayeff, turntable, light and fan not coming on when I shut door. It starts up by itself. I hear this steady humming noise. Model 85600 or 592.85600-0. It was made in 2007. It was bought at Sears in Canada. My guess is the control pad is no good or the control board. If one of these two not sure if worth to fix because I believe these parts are expensive. I would appreciate any help. Thanks

It was built in 2008 not 2007. Sorry.

How would I check to see if the control board and or the control touch pad is bad?

Thanks jayeff for getting back to me. What you say makes sense. I would agree with you it's in the control board. I'm not sure if there is a relay to provide power to the magnetron . As there is no schematics to be found. I know it was built in 2008? Maybe it's time to retire this one. Just curious would you know roughly what the cost would be for the control board had I needed to change it? In Canadian dollars please? I'm guessing around $150??

Hi @mycatginger ,

My initial thought is the control board only because if it was the control pad, then, to my mind, the light, fan and turntable would also operate because the control pad doesn't control these functions. (don't know your model so maybe the light but not the others). It just sets up the control board and the start button sets it going. If it was the start button on the Control pad for example then I'd assume that 'all' the functions, light, fan turntable would work, when they shouldn't.

This all may be a moot point as I cannot find your model number listed in any of the Kenmore appliance spare parts suppliers available online. Neither SearsPartsDirect or AppliancePartsPros or RepairClinic recognize the model number even though the model number is correct as I found the User Guide for it. You could try calling them to see if they do have parts but they are not listed etc, or whether they know or not that the model is no longer supported for spare parts

It may be that there is a relay on the control board that supplies power to the magnetron and its contacts are stuck operated I don't know as I cannot find a schematic for the oven, (there isn't one on the inside of the oven cabinet is there?) so this is only conjecture

Thanks jayeff. I agree with you the problem is more than likely in the control board. You make sense since no light comes on , no fan and the turn table doesn't operate when it turns itself on. Cannot find any schematics? Not sure if there is a relay on board to turn power on to magnetron . Since it was built in 2008 I think it's time to retire? Like you said I may not be able to get parts for it. Would you know just curious how much would a board like that cost? Around $150????? I'm guessing?

@mycatginger , John , I suspect the problem is a stuck or shorted keypad/control board as mentioned by jayeff, at almost 10 years old it may be time to consider replacing, as other parts may start to also fail and if you shop diligently you may get a good deal on new. Good luck. I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

Ok thanks for everything. I've decided it's time to buy a new one. Even if I were to fix this problem it's already 9 years old. My guess is a stuck control board( maybe relay if exists) Time to retire.

John, probably best as parts get harder and their expense, take your time if able shop around, check the reviews of them, etc., thanks for posting back. Good luck and have a good evening.

We had this happen once before. It was cause by slamming the door shut. The shock of that bumped the micro switch arm off of its proper location. After putting it back in place, it worked again as normal. Test it before reinstalling the casing to make sure it’s repaired
