Mid-2010 MBP cleaning and potential upgrade help/advice

Hello everyone,

I have the mid-2010 MBP running Yosmite (I got to upgrade the OS X) and it has started acting up.

I've notice when I have multiple programs and tabs on chrome running, my computer starts to run understandably slow. Will upgrading the RAM make my computer run faster/smoother? Should I got 8gb or 16gb? Any specific brand recommendations?

Also, my battery is shot, has anyone purchased 3rd party battery's before? Any specific brand recommendations? I am concerned while using my MBP with multiple programs running and charging my laptop, the 3rd party battery will overheat and explode, do 3rd party battery's explode easily/often?

Lastly, when I move my MBP, sometimes, the whole computer will shut down, or when I lift the screen and wake the laptop from sleep mode, it won't turn on and I have to force shut it down. I'm assuming theres some sort of connectivity issue occurring. I plan on opening the laptop and making sure all wires are connected properly. What screwdriver's do I need to open my MBP? Do I require one of those full sets, or just a select few?

I appreciate any advice/feedback, thank you.

You are facing a few different issues but this is still a great computer! It still has some life in it and worth repairing.

To start with you'll need visit an Apple Store or Authorized service center to have them replace for free the HD cable as there is a known issue with them in this model. If you can't get to anyone to get it done here's the IFIXIT guide on how: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2010 Hard Drive Cable Replacement You do want to use the newer version of the cable here: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable - Apple P/N 923-0104

While you are their ask them how much a replacement battery will cost you (hold off getting it done for now). This is what a real Apple battery will cost you, now look at a few sites like IFIXIT, The bookYard and review the IFIXIT guide here: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2010 Battery Replacement. I would stick with the major players like these folks as they stand behind their stuff.

As to getting the zip back to your system you may want to look at reformatting the drive and in-installing the OS and your stuff from a backup. Otherwise you might want to look at upgrading the drive to a SSHD or SSD.

As for RAM this system will support unto 16 GB! But before you add more RAM focus on the drive first. You might find after replacing the cable and reformatting the drive you'll be OK, If its still so slow upgrade the drive to a SSHD or SSD which will get you more performance.

Overall I would say you would be wasting time and money on this laptop. A ram upgrade may well "speed up" the machine (it doesn't actually speed it up it just allows it to handle more). As for the battery mac's are very picky and a battery is far more than just cells, they also have a circuit board in them which controls many things. It has been my experience when replacing mac batteries with third party batteries that it often creates more issues such as random shutdowns triggered by unexpected readings from the new battery. So either buy a apple battery, be prepared for problems or some people say to swap out the brains of the battery from your old one to the new one. That however is a lot of trouble. The other issues you are having could be attributed to many things from lose connections to failing hardware. I would need a little more info to further diagnose. i.e. does it shut down or does it just turn off. What if anything shows on the screen ect. The information you can provide in this manner the better help I can be. If you look on this site you should be able to find a tear down of your laptop that list the proper drivers.
