Ear speaker low sound when making calls

I have a customer that brought his iPhone 6 saying his ear speaker volume was very low and he could barely hear what the other person was saying even in a quiet room. I did some tests and when I use the recorder to record my voice and listen to it through the ear speaker the sound is crisp and clear, I hear very well.

When I try to make a phone call, the sound is very low, even with the volume at maximum. I tried switching SIM card and even replacing the ear speaker and flex cable.

What could be causing this problem ?

This may sound a little awkward and problaby a bit unhygienic but ive had serveral phones with low/rattling earpice sound.

This universal quickfix have worked everytime for me.

No need for tools at all and you dont risk to destroy you phone due to opening it.

Use the tip of your tongue and lick the net.

Then suck the net and after that clean the net with something small.

Repeat 3 Times.

The earspeaker sound will be as new.

Most times when I come across this it is a buildup of dirt and oils in the mesh covering the ear speaker on the front panel.

Start by

removing the earspeaker.

Once you have it exposed use a q-tip with isopropyl alcohol to moisten the buildup in the mesh.

Then use a can of compressed air and the sharp tip of the spudging tool to scrape and blow away any buildup. You can hold the panel up to the light to see your progress. It may take a few soakings and shots of compressed air to free all of the buildup.

If there was dirt in the mesh or speaker the sound would be muffled in every circumstance. Like I said, the sound is OK when listening at a recording. When I make phone calls this is where I get the problem.

- de

Thanks Joseph - your tip worked for me. I took off the earpiece assembly and cleaned it until I could see through the mesh, Awesome!

- de

Omg this totally works!! I was scared I’d have to get my phone opened up. Thankyou so much!!

Nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnno. Do not do it Below is a post by Kim S and works FANTASTIC

This may sound stupid, but bear with me. There’s a fine mesh covering the earpiece. It often gets completely clogged with dirt and oils over time. This blocks the sound waves coming from the speaker. If you moisten and suck out the dirt (yeah, some might get in your mouth) this may fix this. I am not joking, search the web and you’ll find that this has been a common issue for older phones.

I had a similar issue and tried sucking out the dirt but then realized that it did not work. I finally managed to solve the problem using this link:

I went to the Apple Store. They ran a diagnostic to confirm something was wrong. The tech took out a small brush and cleaned the tiny earpiece. Now it works fine.

Try turning off the noise cancellation on the Settings. Also try turning on/off the hearing aid compatibility.

Omg! People! I thought I had no way of coming back out of a milkshake being dropped on my iPhoneX BUT alas I’m saved!

So first

• wet q tip or ear bud

•put it on your speaker, let the water stay there a bit

•Now here’s the part you need to trust me on! Play a music that has Crazy bass. I played what about me by lil Wayne and it worked so bleh.

• while the song is being played keep your phone in a downright position. the water should fall out of the speaker.

•notice properly cuz the scene is amazing, water vibrates it’s cool. But as the water vibrates and comes out of the speaker, dry it with your dry part of q tip.

See the difference and let me know

i love you Apple users

Hello if anyone else is still having this problem and it started around the time iOS 12 was released or you purchased the phone sometime after one of the updates added a feature for iOS devices that support surround features for the audio if you go into your settings>general>accessibility and scroll down to the audio section you’ll see an option that says mono if this is turned off this could be your problem. Just turn mono on and it’s a night and day difference. In the past I’ve tried cleaning the earpiece and nothing worked so I started looking at the settings and noticed I now don’t have a scroll bar for call volume and a few new options were there that weren’t before like the option for Bluetooth hearing aids. My issue with mine didn’t start till after an iOS update and so I looked for any settings that could be causing it. Naturally I’ve already tried cleaning the mesh over the earpiece and had already considered replacing the earpiece speaker all together but I didn’t think that’s where the issue was coming from as there was still sound coming from it however quiet. And before you ask no My hearing is fine and usually I have to turn down call volume really low because of how loud it is so this being an overnight change was pretty strange to me. Anyway hope this helps for anyone still having this issue. To me it shouldn’t be too hard to fix the update so that it can have separate settings for both speakers but I think that’s kind of the point considering apples past. Wouldn’t surprise me to find out they turned off a feature by default so you would think your phone is broken and have to buy a new one

I literally only made an account so I could reply to your suggestion and say THIS WORKED! I tried all the other wacky advice and yours was the one that finally made my phone calls sound better. People are also telling me I sound clearer and louder on their end. I turned on mono and turned off hearing aid.

- de

Hi Johnny! This has been a superb advise - thank you so much for sharing this.

My phone was not working in spite of cleaning the ear speaker mesh multiple times and also turning-off noise cancellation. These barely made a difference.

However, your remedy really made a difference of day n night! And completely agree with you - this could be another tiny ploy of Apple to make you spend a few hundred dollars for nothing. I admire Apple for its innovations, and wish they showed more grace by not resorting to such tweaks!

Thanks a ton, again

- de

So glad that helped others. If anyone is still having issues then yes rubbing alcohol and a q-tip scrub the earpiece and as dumb as it may sound check the "pinhole" mic below your home button and clean that as well. Sometimes the noise cancellation can also dull the sound during calls or make it way louder than it should based off of the feedback from the microphone.

- de

Haha! I came to this solution myself and am posting to verify that it works. I tried all the cleaning options (which never made sense because the same speaker works well for everything except phone calls, but you have to try). I also tried turning off noise cancellation (no difference). Also tried turning off hearing aids (not sure how it got on (Apple?), but that made no difference either, so I started playing with all the different settings to do with sound, and turning it to mono was the only thing that fixed it. Even mid-call if you switch to mono, the volume goes way up. If you turn mono off the volume goes way down. This is absolutely the fix--and I think it is a bug. We should be able to enjoy stereo sound as well as to be able to use our phones as other than speaker phones. No thank you, Apple.

Okay wow, this worked great… now I didn’t lick the speaker portion. I put a drop or two of Listerine on a Q-tip and cleaned the screen then proceeded to suck the ear piece against my greater reason. But it not only worked great on the Earpiece for the handset, but also the speakers. It sounds crystal clear and loud. thank for the tip, saved me from getting a new phone.

A possible fix is to go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing Aids and toggle Hearing Aid Mode to On.

Is the mesh on the actual screen plugged with dirt or dust? That’s usually the most common issue I come across. Either replace the screen, or if you have old screens laying around replace the mesh that is inside. Obviously option 2 is cheaper.

Most likely it’s the dust cover, if cleaning or replacing the dust cover doesn’t fix it then it could be a the actual speaker itself.

poke the mesh with something small like the sim tray ejector.. poke its in the left Conner of the mesh... but use this temporary because you want to make sure you put new mesh and make sure you don't have a hole during raining days.

Yes the dust cover can get clogged with skin oils and dust that can turn into a putty like paste and seal the metal mesh screen blocking the the airflow and the vibrations for the sound making it sound muffled.

Great idea on how to fix it from Kim S. But I work with a lot of others peoples phones that go through some fairly nasty things and if putting your mouth on it is not an option then I would suggest alcohol and a suction cup which works for me.

Although sometimes I have seen other shops or individual people attempting a screen repair which folded the rubber top speaker gasket in front of the top speaker muffling the sound as described. If absolutely necessary ( like the time a customer spilled paint on their phone) you can change the dust cover atteched to the screen quite easily and the cost only a few cents a piece on amazon or eBay.

Like many here, I had the same problem with my iPhone 6s. I used a q-tip dipped in some isopropyl alcohol and then slightly squeezed out the excess. I wiped down the ear speaker and just let it dry naturally. I forgot all about it until the next day when I received a phone call, and whaddayaknow, it worked !!!

Guys I have the same problem and you won’t belive how easy I fixed it! I almost bought a new iPhone! All you have to do is to chew some gum for like 2 minutes and then carefully stick it on the speaker! Than remove it gently in order for the dirt or anything else to stick to the gum! Trust me it works!

I have fixed many problems like this. Most of the time I see that the anti dust mesh screen covering the speaker is clogged and caked with ear wax, makeup, skin oil, etc. For a thorough fix removing the screen and holding the mesh screen close to a light source should have abundant light. If light is barely visible, washing with alcohol and blowing from the inside out with compressed air seems to be the best fix. If concerned about opening the device then I would recommend alcohol and a fine brush similar to a clean short haired makeup brush seems to be effective although not as long term of a fix, it seems to do the trick for awhile.
