Odd screen related issues

So I will try to explain this as best as I can and add details that I miss later on at the top of this question.

I have been having this odd assortment of issues with the screen on my iPhone 5S. So for the majority of the usage of the phone for the past year and a half the screen has been is a kind of "Night Time Mode" if you will. The screen has an effect where everything is very dark and sometimes the brightness will increase and all colors will look very vibrant and pronounced, basically how the display is normally supposed to look. This usually lasts for 30-45 seconds at a time, then the screen goes back to it's rather dark setting and the display becomes unresponsive from touch, all buttons still work though, the only way to fix this is to power cycle the display and unlock the phone again. Also the screen is very vulnerable to picture stains where if I use an app for a few minutes then all the common menu options will still be on screen when I go to the home screen. If I were to pull up a solid black screen I would still see the app layout and the time, cell reception, and battery percentage, etc. Whenever the screen goes bright the picture stains are usually instantly dissolved and the display is near perfect. But like I said it usually only lasts for around 30 seconds.

Now I have seen several articles saying that this might be related to the wiring inside the phone connect the display to the motherboard and I took the phone apart (with extreme caution to not have any chance at adding any wear to any parts) and cleaned the connector with electronic parts cleaner on a fiber swab (meant to clean electronic connection) and had no luck with the behavior of the display.

Now to my questions. Is it possible the display had suffered a trauma from a simple drop that permanently damaged it in some way to cause this odd behavior? The phone had been dropped a few times in the last year or so, mostly being recent drops from the phone falling out of my shorts pocket while sitting. I can't come up with any plausible reason for the screen to behave like this. I'm extremely considering dropping $60 for a new display and digitizer at this point if it needs to be done. I just want to make sure this isn't repairable before doing so.
