Older PS3 stuck updating and can't go into safe mode.

I have an older PS3 (It was a gift, I don't know the hard drive size.), and the disk drive does not work. Until I get around to repairing the drive I was going to give it to my mother for watching Netflix.Unfortunately, when I connected it to the internet it began the update, and then it had an error, and will not go into safe mode.

I would like to know how I could remove the hard drive and reformat it so that it will be past the update problem.

Is that possible? and how would I go about that?

Solución Elegida

yes it is possible....follow this guide for removal and instillation. Sustitución del disco duro de una PlayStation 3 after the drive is removed if you have a computer with an extra sata power connector and data cable you can power down your system plug it in and boot your system. you can also use an extra external enclosure if you have one. now this is the tricky part...if the hdd is a 32gb or smaller you can use windows to format it (FAT32)...if it is larger than 32gb us this program http://www.ranish.com/part/ use version 2.43 (i have never used it but it was recomended on a forum).....after you reinstall the hdd it should be a simple follow the instructions on screen...make sure you have a jump drive fromated fat32 as well with the latest ps3 update that you can download here http://us.playstation.com/support/system...

i hope this helps

Good Luck,

Cody

Ok, I have reformatted the disk, the PS3 prompts me to use a mass storage device

(in this case my re-formatted USB(FAT32) with the current PS3 update in a file marked update, that is in a file marked PS3)

It says checking pleas wait, and I wait and wait and do not get any further. Suggestions?

PS: I couldn't get the ranish to work, but the device manager worked fine.

I fixed my nephews PS3 that had a similar problem, as soon as you turned it on it would go straight into the update only to hang about half way into updating and give an error code. There was also another person on here with the same problem and I told them how I got around this problem. You do not need to reformat the drive or loose any of your data or connect it to a computer. Check out the post here:

I am getting error code (8002F147) on my PS3

All I did to get rid of the error was to remove the HDD then turn on the PS3 "WITHOUT" the HDD then when you get the "missing hard drive error code" insert the HDD. Then turn off the PS3, then turn the PS3 back on and be patient just let the update run. I do not know why or how this worked but it worked for me. Good luck!!!

If you are updating your o/s make sure everything is working on your PS3, i.e disk drive not working will get you stuck on the update page. Hope this helps!!

I believe that any hardware error will get you hung up during the update. I think most common error is the BR drive error.

This solved my problem, faulty bluray drive connector. Only valid fix I found on the internet. Thanks Buddy

your bt/wifi card is $@$*/broken.

id suggest you call sony, but then theyll tell you to send your ps3 in requiring $100 - $500 and so they can go f$ck themselves.

So the only option left is to unplug playstation and do what i did:

P1SS SH1T PUNCH HAMMER THE PIECE OF SH1T IN AND FINALLY SMASH IT ON THE GROUND AND CRY.

Make sure your wifi/memory card daughtercard is completely connected. If the ribbon cable is not fully inserted, you can get the failure you describe.
