iPhone 5 won't charge after battery is fully discharged

The iPhone 5 refuses to charge once the battery is completely discharged. I have changed the battery and the charging port and problem is still there.

When I put a charged battery in, the phone shows that it's charging when plugged in. But again, once it empties to zero, charging it does nothing.

Someone said i should be doing a hard reset. Anyone have any definitive answer please?

No charging on flat battery or turned off means bad U2 Tristar charging chip.

Get the U2 Tristar Charging IC chip replaced.

It's a component on the logic board that goes bad when the user uses a copy lightning cable / non-certified MFi lightning cable or a car charger.

You will need to find someone that does microsoldering for charging IC on iPhones.

Thanks. I suspected it was IC related. But it's been very strange. I put a new battery in and after a couple of minutes it started charging. I also updated to iOS 10.2 and during download and install, the phone turned off a couple of times but it finally installed.

I've discharged and recharges a couple of times and seems to be a lot more stable now. See how it goes and thanks for the advice
