Controller doesn't work with microphone

My son got a new Xbox one controller for Christmas. He has been playing it for one week. Tonight it just randomly stopped working with the microphone on his headset. The controller will play the game but his microphone doesn't work anymore with that controller. Why? He can hear the game but they can't hear him.
