ex-works unlocked 3GS now Blocked in UK

I recently acquired an ex-works unlocked 3GS and have been using it for some months, trouble free, with a pay as you go sim from an Austrian virtual network. I visited the UK in springtime and the cell connection was working fine. Now I am again in the UK and get "No Service". I bought another sim for 3UK, also pay as you go and this also gives "no service". I then got help from an iphone specialist dealer/repairer who tried several sims from different UK carriers. None of them worked. He told me the phone had been blocked in the UK and that he has seen many such cases.

Can anyone tell me if this blocking is by Apple or All of the tested carriers? Better still, is there a way to remove this block.

if the phone originated in the uk it is possible the original owner posted it as lost or stolen and a block has been put on it-hence no service. you could contact the service provider directly to check-you'll need the imei number. alternatively there is a web service that checks this for a few pounds.(sorry can't think of the name at present but i think the cost was 2.50pounds)

Thanks for the answer. The phone is not reported lost or stolen AFAIK. Bought it in Dublin from a specialist mobile phone dealer. It works every where my provider has a roaming partner except the UK.

Next time I´m over there I will search for the web service you mention.

Turns out that my phone will only accept contract sim... I'd been trying payg... It was orange. You could try a jailbreak
