water spill damage, external monitor works

Hi everyone,

I spilled water into my MacBook.

I turned it off immediately and dried it up. Since the water spill, the LCD retina screen is black and the apple icon is not lightened.

I tried with Cmd+option+P+R as said on Apple's official website, but it did not work.

I changed the display data cable, that did not work either. Then I bought a new screen on eBay, it didn't work as well.

I still need to connect to an external monitor, which actually works quite well.

Do I need to replace the display data cable socket? It is extremely difficult to solder.

Can anybody help me with this?

@eric_hexin post some good images of your connector as well as the rest of the board. That will allow us to see what you see. you also want to give us your exact model number or even better the 820-XXXX number of your logicboard.

Sorry to say I think you got distracted on looking for a big problem here when a smaller one was likely the issue.

Apple uses fuse links to protect some areas of the system. I suspect you blew the one for the backlight. To verify you'll need to use a flashlight to aim though the Apple logo in the lid to be a poor mans backlight. If you can see the faint images of your desktop icons the issue is the fuse link and/or the backlight driver. My money is on the fuse link ;-}

Here's the location (marked in blue) its the little tan chip with the P on it (sometimes its just a dot):

Now with the better images it does look like the pins at the bottom here need to be re-soldered (marked in blue).

Thanks a lot for the reply. It is a good point which I didn't think about to check. I shined light from the back through the icon and in the front directly on to the screen, I did not see my desktop in the black screen. Good point though.

Not good :-{ If you can't see the desktop you have a main logic board issue. Best to just swap t out at this point.

If the old LCD cable was burnt, the LCD connector will need to be replaced since it burns the inside. The bottom few pins look a bit strange, but it doesn't look bad (difficult to tell from the picture).

Shine a bright light onto the screen itself, not through the Apple logo. Retina's are quite difficult to tell if it is no picture or no backlight (there are more backlight layers on the Retina's, so the light through the logo tends not to shine through well). Shine a light directly/resting on the screen and you should see an image hopefully, or hold the screen under a bright lamp.

The backlight fuse will likely have blown too on this model, so check continuity on that.

It's possible the original screen got liquid damage on the screen PCB (if it was spilt onto the screen) which will burn the connector here as well. You can remove the hinge cover and wifi antenna on this easily, without having to remove the LCD panel to check this. If it is burnt, replace it before connecting it to the logic board, it will blow the fuse if powered on.

Soldering is not difficult if you have the right tools, but if you have never done it before I would recommend sending it somewhere to diagnose properly.

EDIT: looking at the close up of the LCD connector, you will need to replace this. It has been burnt in this area so it is likely the fuse will blow again if this isn't replaced, or it could burn out a new cable. Replacing is the safest option, and drag soldering is your friend :)
