Why can't I use all focus lenghts

Hello,

if I set my camera (Nikon D3200) to manual mode an try to play with the kit zoom lens (Nikon 18-55mm VR II ) then I can only turn the focus to a range between 24-35 mm and I can't get a sharp image even when I try to turn the small wheel . So is my lens broken or is there something with my camera?

I was advised that the motor in the lense is possibly kinda worn out and replacing the lense should help.Keep the body.it also has some kinda knocks and sort of intermittently sticks a bit at the 55mm end this was attributed to an overtight full lense rubberised cap being pulled on and off. They are delicate.Who knows?but its almost certainly lense based rather than body.

No it's not locked. There is A switch for VR mode and another A|M switch which I think is for auto or manual focus. But there is no switch for macro

by small wheel you must mean the viewfinder focus

The 18-55 mm kit lense doesnt have a VR.

at least not on my 2012 + kit supplied one. Will a replacment lense featuring VR work on a non VR original fitting?

are you saying that the lens will not zoom past the 35mm mark so that you can not set the lens to a focal length between 35mm and 55mm, if that is the case then it is likely a blockage in the lens, the lens will need taking apart and cleaning, this will usually solve this problem, you'll have to search youtube for a guide on how to do this. Kit lenses are not the best glass to start with and to be honest I wouldn't hesitate in give it a go yourself, if you a serious or even a hobby photographer you'll be looking to move away from the kit lens and buy some better lenses, you can get some very good used lenses.

Me too .

My 10 year old D3200 progressively started to skip shots and lock ons on auto focus. The shop advised using it manually but exactly like above anything after

35-55m is a blur everything before sharp.

Yes its a kit.

Should it ALL be sharp at evfry focal length in manual then?

if the lens works in auto mode, then you may have an internal lens issue. the lens motor/gear assembly must completely disengage when you use the manual mode. what may have happened is the internal parts may not be moving completely or have been partly damaged from a lens strike or even a sudden partial switch from one mode to another. any sticking, ratcheting sounds or noise from a lens is bad news, as they are designed to act smooth.
