Mac Mini won't boot after upgrading with SSD

Hi,

I upgraded my Mac Mini (late 2014) with a SSD. The problem is it won't boot. Only the sleep light indicator blinks every 5 seconds. On this model the RAM is soldered to the logic board so it is well seated.

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance.

It sounds like the SSD is not prepped up correctly. If you have a good internet connection you can go into internet recovery and then using Disk Utility option with in it delete the MS windows partition, then create the needed GUID partition map & create a fresh Mac partition. Once done, you should be able to install the Mac OS. This will take sometime. Here's more on how to do it: About macOS Recovery

Your other option is to find a friend with a Mac and then connect your system to his in Target Mode. Using his Mac to prep up your SSD which is inside your Mac Mini, basically doing the samething I outlined above. Here's more on how to do it: Share files between two computers with target disk mode

The last method here is to reconnect your HD to your mini using a SATA to USB adapter cable like this one: StarTech SATA to USB 3 adapter cable. This will allow you to boot up under your old drive leveraging it to prep up your new SSD. During the OS install you will be asked if you want to migrate your user account, apps and data over this is a great way of doing that. In case your SSD has less space you can limit what is transferred.

Do remember you do want to leave about 1/3 of the drive free if you have a smaller SSD, and 1/4 for a 512 GB or larger drive.

Thank you for your reply. The SSD does not need to be prepped up. It will just not boot. I have a drive dock that allows me to check if a drive is okay. I will do that.

Mac OS will install on a drive that has a FAT32 or ExFAT partition present on the drive, it just won't boot as the GUID partition map is not present.

See if hosting the drive in your external case allows it to boot up when you hold the Option key and then select the SSD drive in the external case.

Hello @louisfischer,

I would try reinstalling the HDD (or SDD) that was in the Mac Mini and check if it will boot up from there. If it will, then you can diagnose from their.

But, if the Mac Mini will not boot up with the old HDD (or SSD) then there is an internal problem and you will need more help.

Thank you for your reply. I tried to reinstall the HDD in the Mac Mini and the boot failed. Plus I installed the SSD in another Mac Mini and it worked like a charm. It seems like the problem comes from neither the SSD nor the HDD.

Ah! So the issue is not the drive! Now it's sounds like the ribbon cable is damaged or not fully plugged in. ;-{

That is good news, but also bad. So I would recommend trying to purchase a new ribbon cable. But do a full check to make sure it is attached properly

Did you find the solution? Right now I am having the same problem. Upgraded to SSD, no boot, no chime, just lead blinking every 5 seconds. Re installed the old drive, the result is the same.

Any help will be appreciated.
