Why does my computer shut down when I press the shift button?

The shift key on the laptop is not functioning properly. When I press the shift key when typing, the computer shuts off. If I press any other key it is fine but the shift key is malfunctioning.

mine was the alternate key.. it will shutting down my computer..

Mine is the left shift key, tab, and all the numbers. I've tried one method that while your laptop is booting up that you hold the keys down until the booting is complete, but it seems I have to do it every time the laptop starts and I can't do that. I've tried another 4 or so methods, but nothing works.

This is an answer a year (!) late, but I had this exact problem (left shift key, right?) and solved it just now.

For the people who have the problem of a specific key causing a windows shutdown: if it is an external keyboard, hold the problem key down when you re-plug in your keyboard. If this is a laptop keyboard, press the shift key down until your initial boot up process is complete. It seems to be caused by the computer confusing a depressed shift key signal with Alt + F4.

If you are not sure which key exactly triggers the shutdown, you can download Shutdownguard and start pressing keys one by one to see which one triggers the shutdown process.

It's hard to say what exactly could be causing this issue, but there are a few things you can try. First, use an external and/or on-screen keyboard to see if it is pressing 'shift' that is causing the shut down, or if it's the keyboard button itself. If it's the keyboard button itself, then you may want to consider replacing the keyboard.

As a tech person I get asked questions like this all the time. First, check to see the color of the letters on the function button, which usually are Fn or FN. See what the colors on the rest of the keyboard are, the function button is usually a different color than the rest of the keyboard letters and numbers are. I have seen anything from blue to aquamarine to red to orange to brown to black when the keys are on a pink laptop and the letters are white. Make sure that the function key is not on when you are pressing the shift key (or the 4). The function key enables the ability to change the brightness settings, the volume, enable numbers lock and disable Wi-Fi among other things.

If this doesn’t work then try updating the laptop’s keyboard drivers. If that doesn’t work try remembering when the last time everything worked the way you wanted it to, and go into system restore and restore the laptop to a previous date when it worked the way you wanted it to.

I can’t count how many times I have accidentally done this myself and then asked myself WTF when things go back to normal. One way you can tell if the function button is on is if you plug in an external keyboard and it works fine.

I hope this works.

Your suggestions are of no help. My laptop completely shut down when I pressed the escape key. How do I get it back on?

a bit late but here is the solution, you need to change the function in the EFI from function keys = media to function key. This is located in the main section

Try using different keyboard, if this doesn't work follow their instructions. My keyboard was defective without me knowing so I replaced it.
