No, The RAM has been soldered shut on Apple laptops for the past 3 years at least.

As stated above, RAM has been soldered on to these MacBook Pro models with Retina since their inception.

However, if your question was actually slightly different, on purchase you can get the 16GB option. It's a bit ambiguous as to whether you mean pre-purchase or post-purchase. Unfortunately 16GB is the limit. You can't get 32GB options.

To clearify here you can buy either a 8 or 16 GB system. Once you walk out the door you can't upgrade it later!

As to supporting more than 16 GB of RAM. The processor Apple is using can support it but the high speed, low power version of the RAM they are using is only supported to 16 GB. Which is Apples reasoning on not offering more RAM.

Technically, the amount of current draw between 16 to 32 GB is so slight it should be possible once Intel signs off on the high speed, low power RAM.

The other factor here is space, the logic board layout does not offer enough space to add in the additional 4 chips without a complete redesign, this series of MacBook Pro's will not see it as a option (all three of them).

I agree, the excuse Apple is giving us about power draw does seem a bit bogus, but the largest issue is that the Ram is

1). Soldered on.

2). Proprietary, according to reports by LinusTechs. So, no luck with 3rd party, even if you were brave enough to solder your own.

@suchiththa - Be careful here, I think your mixing things up a bit. The RAM is a standards based product. What I think might be confusing is the packaging which is newer than what most people have seen in a laptop system. This memory is often seen in tablets and phones.

The SSD module is Apples own design! Here in the Function key model it's removable. But, the Track Bar models its soldered to the logic board.

@danj

Turns out I was mistaken, yes, I was confusing the state of the new SSD in the Touch Bar model with the Ram. Thanks for correcting me there!

I have the same question really, as my RAM has failed in my A1708 Macbook Pro - therefore I need to buy a new logic board to replace it. - So, although I currently have the 8gb RAM logic board in my mac - is there anything stopping my from upgrading to the 16gb logic board, since I am replacing the whole thing anyway?

If you are replacing the whole board, there's nothing stopping you. It's a brand new board.

Excellent answer, thank you. I was worried the rest of the macbook wouldn't support the higher RAM so this is good news. I can give my macbook an upgrade, whilst repairing. Every cloud...
