1982 mercedez 240d w123 wont stay on

I have a 1982 240d it sometimes turns on after a lot of cranks but only stays on for a couple of seconds and then shuts off. Previously the car was working perfectly but it had poor compression so I decided to take out the engine and rebuild it. Once it was time to put everything back together and start the engine, the car only turn on twice n shut off right away. I have checked the timing a couple of times and everything seems to be on the right markings, I replaced glow plugs, battery, starter, fuel filters and purged all the fuel lines, I also tried a couple of fluids to purge the fuel system but I get no results. I have also tried starting fluid the car stays on a bit longer but still the same thing. I believe it has to do with not having enough fuel pressure or something related to the fuel supply because timing and compression are good. I have just reached a dead end and i am running out of ideas. If anyone knows how solve this problem any advice will be really helpful.

Anubis. From googling, these are things for you to try and check. Are valves adjusted correctly, are you getting fuel flow(loosen injector line and crank engine), is fuel leaking/squirting from line at injector if not then there is a pressure problem, leaking line, clogged filter, faulty pump, air in fuel system (may have to bleed a few times).

Check the attached links, instruction and guides, and do more searching if need be, lots of info out there. Good luck .

I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

Thanks for your help!!.. I have done all of that purging several times i do get fuel on the injectors but I still can't get it to turn on. Ill check my injector nozzles later. What I don't understand is if everything was working properly what could of gone wrong it has much better compression so it should of be working better. Does anything on this cars get affected when it sits out there for long periods of time?.

Anubis, Need good strong battery, has to spin quick, fuel separation(water in fuel), Glow plugs are new are they all working good(test them) and as I wrote before lots of good trouble shooting tips on the net. Good luck.

Pull the brown vacuum line from rear of injection pump. This connects to the vacuum shut-off element. If vacuum lines were connected incorrectly, constant vacuum will cause the pump to shut off fuel delivery within a few seconds after engine has started (the amount of time required to build up enough vacuum). If removing line allows engine to run, check the vacuum lines for proper connection and also test the vacuum shut-off switch (device is controlled by ignition key position). Sometimes the shut-off switch can fail open allowing constant vacuum to be applied, thus causing engine to stop running after a few seconds.
