Paper keeps jamming no matter what I do!

My Epson XP-850 had a paper jam. I cleared out all jammed paper, including going in from the back, but now, when I try to print, I get a grinding sound and the new paper jams immediately. I tried everything: flattening the paper, lining it up with care, even trying just a single sheet, with the same result: grind, grind, jam. I fear I damaged something when clearing the original paper jam. HELP!!!!!!

I just received a refurbished XP-960 and experienced similar paper jam problems. Plain paper generally worked, but photo paper from cassette 1 or 2 jammed on nearly all print jobs. I'm running on a Mac, so Windows might be different, but I went into the system printer preferences options and switched to "Thick paper and envelopes" selection ON. Since changing that preference selection, the paper jam frequency is much less, not perfect, but tolerable. This printer does not have a straight through printing path, like my previous Epson printers had, so the paper feeds from the paper cassette and has to make a sharp U-turn to feed to the print head and thicker paper seems to jam in the mechanism much more easily than the straight through designs used in earlier models. I hope this helps improve some of your paper jamming problems. Dave J.

Thank you! I'm going to try this!

I have this same issue. I have an Epson WF-7720 which just started doing this yesterday. Every time I try to print from either cassette, the paper jams and while it does, it makes a lot of grinding and squeaking noises. I tried setting the paper setting to "thick," but that did not help. I couldn't find a solution to this online and just submitted an email to Epson Support. This printer is only a couple months old. Very frustrating!

When print request is made, printer prepares to print. Then it attempts to pull paper up to print. But a loud clicking sound is made while the printer attempts to pull a piece of paper. Paper is jammed into the flexible feeder arm which sits just above the end of the paper tray.

I’ve looked for pieces of paper jammed inside the machine. The loud clicking says something is wrong. Help.

Steve Lankhorst,

QUEST-ION ♞?

Did you manage to resolve the issue with the "loud clicking sound? I've had a lot of issues since downloading Big Sur last week. Everything from Garageband freezing, Native Instruments & Steinberg actions often end in one or both apps freezing/quitting.

My Macbook Pro stopped seeing my Epson XP-442 & after calling Epson & at least being able to "see" the printer, I couldn't print.

I've had various issues since downloading Big Sur - particularly with Audio Apps eg; Garageband, Steinberg & Native Instruments.

"Smart Technology" is dumbing us down!

Solución Elegida

@ecooney try to check those things systematically. Start with what Epson suggest:

Poor Paper Loading

[Presumable Cause]

• Use of 3rd party media

• Edge guide mis-setting

• Foreign material

• Part come-off

• Contamination of paper feed roller on Pickup Roller or Duplex Unit

• Paper Casette Assy damage

• Contamination of PF Roller

[Major Troubleshooting]

• Recommendation of EPSON media

• Edge guide re-setting

• Foreign material removal

• Part re-installation

• Pickup Roller replacement

• Duplex Unit replacement

• Paper Casette Assy replacement

• Printer Mechanism replacement

Paper Jam Error

(Occurrence Condition]

This error occurs when top/bottom of paper is not detected by ASF PE Sensor or PE Sensor in the specified steps of paper loading / ejecting operation correctly.

[Major Occurrence Timing]

• Power-on timing

• Paper loading timing

• Paper eject timing

[Major Troubleshooting]

1 Push "Start" button after the jammed paper in printer mechanism is removed.

2 If this error occurs again, check foreign materials / parts come-off / parts damage / parts

deformation in paper path.

3 If this is not solved by 2), check the following parts.

• ASF PE sensor (Paper Guide Rear ASF Assy)

• PE sensor

• Main board

I was at a loss as to why my printer stopped printing & started making strange noises... it wasn't till the next day I tried to clean the various mechanisms & noticed a pen inside the rear section which was obviously inhibiting paper feed/rollers etc. Once removed the printer was almost perfect... I simply ran the various maintenance tests & adjusted accordingly. PERFECT. Thanks common sense (even if it did take 24 hours to kick in!

May not be the same issue, but I had a similar problem with paper jamming endlessly for no apparent reason. Turned out it was the simple thing of not having the paper guide pushed forward enough in the paper tray....

Thank you for this simple solution. I was struggling with paper jam error for many hours until I used your solution for immediate fix

Thanks!! Totally worked for my Epson XP-640. Needs to be pushed forward to “Letter” instead of A4. I hate it slightly less now!

Thanks greatly. It worked for my ecotank printer

Thanks, that fixed it for me, too! (Epson XP-645)

This happens to me. What has been working for me is to switch it to heavy paper on the control panel under settings on the printer. Run a few pieces (it will probably still make the horrible grinding sounds) then switch it back to regular. When it’s switched back to regular for whatever reason this ‘trick’ stops the grinding and jams for awhile.

Strongly suggest you get some rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab. Remove paper tray. Dip swab in alcohol , and clean the paper pickup roller. Don’t touch pickup roller(s) with your bare fingers. Oils can get on roller. Don’t ever turn printer upside down! Use good/fresh/flat paper. Leaving paper in the tray for extended period of time can cause paper to curl on the ends.

Paper jam seems to be helped by using a smaller stack of blank printing paper int the tray. With a larger stack have tried setting at different spots on tray and that has not stopped jams.

In most of the cases, Epson printer says paper jam while there is no paper because of the few reasons.

  1. Some objects are available in the machine.
  2. Roller is unable to rotate properly.

So you need to clean the roller and then retry to access the printer. It should be working fine now. in case, if the error still continues, you need to factory reset the printer.

Might want to double check the printer setting too make sure you have the proper paper size selected.

Lots of places are selling super cheap and super THIN 8-1/2x11 printing paper! Make sure your using QUALITY paper.

If you print a page of text flip it over and see if you can see it from the back side, if so it's cheap thin paper that will NEVER print properly.

Also, get a cotton swap dipped in rubbing alcohol and clean the pickup rollers. They will develope a slick coating over time that will not grip the paper.

My Epsom WF-2450 began loading by pulling the left side of the paper down and not the right, thus causing a paper jam. There is no paper in the machine that could cause this problem. The guide is properly positioned and it has adequate paper. I cleaned the rollers with alcohol and the sensor strip. I ran all the maintenance functions. I began using third party ink that didn't print well for awhile, before this happened, so I am not sure if that had anything to do with it. I also have an Epsom XP-310 that will not print anything (blank pages). Ink cartridges are full and installed properly. I did ran all the maintenance functions and still nothing. Your help with this would be really appreciated.
