Dryer only heats when ambient temps are cool

I have a Kenmore Elite Gas dryer, model 110.92822101. It will only heat when the ambient air temperature is cool, and then for only one heat cycle. Then it will have to cool down before it will heat again. The drum rotates, the timer works, and everything else seems normal, just no heat unless the outside air is cool. The ignitor lights up, but no gas flows. Thoughts?

Most Frequent Causes for Dryer not heating See All Dryer Parts for model 110.92822101

Cause 1

Thermal Fuse

The thermal fuse is a safety device designed to protect the dryer from overheating. The fuse is located on the blower housing or at the dryer’s heat source such as the heating element on electric dryers or at the burner on gas models. The fuse should be closed for continuity meaning it has a continuous electrical path through it when good. If overheated the fuse will have no continuity meaning the electrical path is broken and the fuse has blown out. A multimeter can be used to test it for continuity. Be aware that a blown thermal fuse is an indication of a restricted exhaust vent from the dryer to the outside. Always check the dryer venting when replacing a blown thermal fuse.

Cause 2

Flame Sensor

On a gas dryer, the flame sensor detects the heat emitted by the flame. If the flame sensor isn’t working, the dryer won’t heat. Before checking the flame sensor, first make sure that the igniter and thermal fuse are not at fault. To determine if the flame sensor is defective, use a multimeter to test the sensor for continuity at room temperature. If the flame sensor does not have continuity at room temperature, replace it.

Bart, Just to add a little to mayer's ans. Found this info. on the net. Check the exhaust duct is clean, a dirty duct can cause problems as you mention. Check radiant sensor if checks out OK, probable replace the gas solenoid coils mounted on the gas valve. hope this info. is correct and helps.

Hello Mayer,

Thanks for your help! I appreciate the information.

Both the thermal fuse and flame sensor check out OK. I did check the exhaust vent and it was relatively clean, but I polished it up a bit to get all the leftovers out.

I have heard that the gas solenoid coils can be a problem as well, so I have ordered a pair of those and will report back with my results after they are installed.
