Display Damage and Nearly Dead Digitizer

I've been asked to repair an iPhone 5S which has been exhibiting some strange issues.

  • While the screen is otherwise undamaged and functional, there is a section near the top that looks like something smeared inside the glass. (See attached image)
  • There are also vertical lines of messed up pixels running down the screen. These lines also seem to flicker with no discernible pattern.
  • The most notable problem is that the digitizer is also dead. But, in both the times that I've opened up the phone, and replugged everything inside, the digitizer would then work for a couple minutes.
  • Judging by the casing, this phone has been dropped.

So my question. Is the digitizer unit faulty and need replacing in order to fix the digitizer, or is something else the likely culprit in this instance? My friend is primarily focused on fixing the touch screen.

I've tweaked the brightness and contrast to highlight the damage.

Just an FYI, the digitizer is the touch screen of the phone. Either way when either one goes faulty touch or LCD you need to replace the whole screen anyway as the touch screen layer and LCD are fused together.

TL:DR - Screen probably needs replacing.
