How old is it? Is it banging? Does the agitator move back and forth when empty?

- de

My machine is about 9 years old and continues to go unbalanced at the spin cycle.

What should I do?

- de

Mine is at least 6 years old. The agitator moves when empty.

Vac1126- You commented under a question oabout off balance loads. If you could submit your comment as a new question it would help others find answers to their question. Thanks

The answer to your problem is that many times the suspension rods go bad. Replacement kits are around $50 online. Easy to fix yourself if you're halfway mechanical at all. How- to videos all over the internet. Just search your machine model number.

Remove Shipping Materials

If your washer is new and the problem started immediately, it is likely caused by shipping materials accidentally left in place. On a top-loading washer, a shipping bolt is installed on the bottom center of the washer. Top-loading washers also typically have three shipping bolts, spacers and metal clamps in the back of the washer. Some models may have even more shipping materials that need to be removed. Refer to the installation instructions for your washer and make sure all shipping materials have been removed before using the machine. Failure to remove these shipping materials causes problems with the spin cycle, and it can also damage the machine permanently.

Level the Machine

Check that the machine is level across the front, back and sides. A machine that is not level will rock during the spin cycle and cause the machine to be off balance. All four legs should be in firm contact with a solid floor. A carpeted surface can throw this balance off. If your washer is located on a pedestal, the problem can be amplified. Top-loading washers automatically adjust to level. If something has shifted, you can relevel a top-loading washer by tipping the washer forward, then placing it back on the floor. Front-loading washers level by turning a leg to raise or lower it. You may need to open the front access panel to loosen the lock nuts that control the legs.

Check for Overloading

If you tend to fill the washer completely to the top, regardless of the weight or composition of the contents, you may be overloading your machine. An easy way to check this is to run a small load. If you have no problems with a small load, consider that overloading may be causing your spin cycle balance problem.

Look for Laundry Caught Below the Tub

Laundry caught below the tub or between the agitator and the inner tub can cause the washer to operate off balance with every load. The problem can be anything: a penny that worked its way out of a pocket, a button that fell off a shirt or a wayward sock or other article of clothing. If you cannot see a problem, you may need to remove the front or top panel and the agitator. Remove the offending item and clean out any debris. Replace the agitator and panel before running the machine again.

Top loading, direct drive, washers will go off balance for several reasons. The most common problem is the items being washed.

•Washing sheets with towels will always create an off balance load. Wash them separate.

•A full load of towels will wash better than just 2 or 3 towels. This is the same with jeans.

•Don't add socks or small items with sheets. The sheets create air pockets and small items get caught in the air pockets and get pushed over the top of basket ending up in the pump or stuck between the inner basket and outer tub.

Most washers get out of balance during normal use, but on the front corners most have adjustable screws, these are large and you will need someone to lift the front up and adjust the side that is uneven or both. Sometimes it takes working with them until it's level. This is usually a very easy fix.. Let me know if it works or if you need any more help, I've just adjusted my dryer. Good luck.

I have a new washer it's a Maytag top load. Just bought about three months ago. The very first time I used it I washed towels. I showed the fob error, I tried everything but just couldn't get it to finish cycle. I called Maytag and they sent a repairman out. He said I had overloaded it. He said Maytag would pay for this visit but if it happens again, I will have to pay. I continue to have problems with every load, it takes forever to finish 1 load and I have to stay with washer. I rearrange the load, try again, same thing, sometimes I just give up and ring out by hand. I know it can't be overloaded with 3 towels that are not plush at all. What could it be. It also ate one of my sheets, I worked so hard to get that out from under the agitator.

Cariglinodj- if you could post the model # it would help us. An off balance load is create when the items(s) end up on one side of tub. If you wash 1 towel it will always be on one side of the tub and always off balance .Rule of thumb :

Wash a medium to full load of towels. They balance themselves out.

Always wash sheets with only sheets

Wash heavy items, like jeans, with only jeans and medium to large loads.

Never wash small items with sheets-wash sheets with only sheets. Baby clothes should never be added to sheets. If this is how you sort and wash your clothes and every load is going off balance then you have a problem with your washer. You have a one year warranty through Maytag. They can not charge you a trip charge if they didn’t repair your washer when they were there. The sheet that it chewed up- was that load just sheets or were towels in it too. Sheets will tangle with other items. If it was washed with only sheets how many sheets were I that load 4 -8-10?

I have a client whom got this problem on a expensive washer less than one year old. She was told to first stabalize with a sturdier floor board. And this time cost was on them. After no change, they found the culprit to be the suspension rods I have written about. Your machine is only three months old but that does not mean those rods could not fail. If that is the cause, then cost is on them.

Lady tech, the model number is MVWB765FW1

The rear legs are with screws, like the front. I do not see the self adjustinv feature

Also be sure you do not mix different materials like light weight clothing with towels. Towels hold more water so when spinning they will pull the load even if clothing is visually distributed.

Update (01/22/2018)

Update:

On two occasions I found a worn out belt to be the cause. On my machine it was visibly worn, but later, on a customers machine, it looked in great condition. She always does light loads so I could not fathom why that was going off balance. After scrutinizing internals, I could only think of the belt as a possible suspect. After changing it, all was right as rain. I do not pretend to know how the belt causes this but it just works.

On another client it turned out that the agitator was slightly bent! It was one of those machines that locks you out, so she never noticed that when she bought it. It worked iffy from day one so she attributed it to being new to washing machines and old house flooring. Two years later it was growingly annoying to just wash. After separating towels it made it bearable. At least until the machine completely conks out.

Found a different solution to this problem. Some washers tubs are suspended on rods with an white ball joint and spring in the end. When the grease dries on the ball joint, it becomes stuck on the rod. So when the spin cycle starts, the other suspensions absorb the energy of weight shifting while the stuck one just leaves it at the tub causing the "bounce". Remove it, free the joint with force, clean and grease. Might as well grease them all at this point. Or buy them new at $25 each at any appliance repair supplier.

If the washing machine “feet” are level, the floor is level, and you have not just recently installed the washing machine, then we would bet that this is from an “imbalanced” or “overloaded” washing machine load. The first step is to check that you don’t have all the clothes on one side. If the “clothing” load is not overloaded or to one side, then it is possible that something fell off inside and the drum is no longer balanced. You may be able to open the front panel of the washing machine up and find out why just by doing a quick visual sweep. However, check that you did not overload the washing machine drum with clothes as this is the most common reason for a dancing and vibrating washer.

If you have tiled floors then this is most likely the cause of the vibration. You can usually just turn the legs with your hand. Turn them to “loosen” and they will come downward and make contact with the floor

I hate "answers" that tell you "just redistribute the clothes so they aren't all on one side." I think most of us already know that. I want to know what to do if you've already seen to the no-brainer stuff.

Me to that doesn't help , this just started 2months ago , and now I have to only do is small loads

I have a brand new LG stacked washer and dryer. When I wash my normal medium sized loads (cottons and polysters with a pair of jeans or towel) it seems to be a little off balance and the dryer shakes and squeaks. It is level and the feet are firmly on the ground. Ran test load with six towels and it worked fine with no vibration but with three towels (the installation test) it struggled a bit but finally got to spin. I will never wash six towels in a normal week. I only have 1-2 towels and 1-2 jeans per week. My previous front loader had no problems with mixed small and medium loads. Not sure what the problem is with this machine. LG Tier 2 support says maybe the counter weight is off. How do you wash small and medium loads with heavy things in the 4.5 cu ft washer? The small load downloadable function says it is for small loads of jeans and towels so it appears the machine is designed for small and medium loads. Maybe I need a machine with a smaller drum. Everything I read said that large machines can do small and medium loads.

It seems as if the load is not heavy enough for the suspension rods to absorb the energy of the bouncing drum. Akin to how an empty pickup bounces, add a heavy load to that pickup and it drives quite well, no bouncing.

I had a Samsung with no agitator for several years and loved it. Then I purchased a new one over a year ago and have had nothing but trouble with it! No matter what the fabric and load size are, it still messes up my load by making a loud noise and finally stops with the error code. I take some of the clothing out or add more in and it still acts like it is fixing to go into orbit. I will NEVER buy another one like this at all. I have to baby sit the machine and can't get much of anything else done because of it sounding like thunder! The machine is on a level surface and shows to be level. I hate this blooming thing!!!

What happened to washing machines? Agitator or not, I'm constantly having an "off-balance" issue. In all my years past Ive never had issues like the washers that have been built in the last 10 years. Is it the suspension rods? Do they make washers anymore without those? I'm ready to go online and find me a 20 yr old Maytag instead of this new stuff. Manufacturers take notice. There are serious design issues. Back to the drawing board! Or go find the old notes. These new appliances are a lot like New Coke!
