replaced LCD and now the phone stays black.

Hi,

I broke my LCD (not the touch screen but only the actual lcd). I bought another one and replaced it following the instructions that are found all over the internet. Easy to do. For the first day or so the screen looked OK except that sometimes it would just be white noise and I would have to squeeze the top of the phone for the correct clear screen to appear. I thought that probably one of the cables wasn't connected correctly. Ribbon number one doesn't seem to connect very well and always seems to be loose. I made 100% sure that it was connected correctly and put the phone back together. Now the screen is completly black. There is no light what so ever. I have done a restart by holding the power and home buttons. It still rings but I can't answer by sliding a finger across the bottom of the screen. It doesn't make any diference. Itunes recorgnises the phone OK though and it also vibrates when I flick the silent switch on the side. I have also put the original broken lcd screen back in but this one also doesn't display anything at all anymore.

Is there anything I can do to test this or repair it?

Check connector 1 for dost or bent pins. It sounds like you have replaced the connection fully. If it keeps popping up on closing try a little layer of card or foam.

I have checked all the pins on both connections and they all look ok to me and clean. I have also tried with a peice of foam and also whilst holding it down with my finger but still no joy.

Any chance you could borrow a friends working phone? Try swapping screens. You've probably blown another LCD by the sounds of it.

That is a great sugestion but I don't think that is going to happen :-) Would you lend me yours after I had possibly blown 2 lcd screens!Thanks anyway. Maybe I will have to buy another one. The problem is I don't know what I did wrong to cause it to blow. I was very carefull.

Power off first! Press power button and wait for slide to power off to appear. The only 2 possibilities left are poor/ wrong part or backlight coil. 3g and 3gs aren't compatible. I've also had " OEM" parts that didn't fit one phone but did on another! Check your parts are compatible or compare connector from old LCD with new. Backlight is $$. Or skills

first of all, you only change the screen on switched off phone. this way, you avoid blowing anything.

after you change the screen, you might need to reset the phone. not restore, but reset. just hold both power and home buttons until you see apple logo. it should take only like 10-15 seconds.

sounds like the lcd went bad again. new parts do this also.

Thanks for that. One problem is when the screen has already gone how can I switch the phone off? Is it a matter of letting the batery run down completly? Obviously I can't see anything on the screen so the only way I can tell if it is off or not is by moving the silence switch on the side and seeing if the phone vibrates.

you should still be able to press the power key for approx 5-10 sec, then slide your finger over the top of screen to power off. if the silence button isn't on you should hear it slide depending on what your settings were. to check it is off you can then flip the vibrate button- no vibrate=off.or you can just let the battery run flat.
