Vertical black line - LCD or MLB connector?

I work at an Apple repair shop, and we purchased a retina 5K iMac for resale. The fusion drive had issues, and I opened the machine up as part of fixing it.

When showing it to a customer, she noticed a fine, 1-pixel wide vertical line toward the right of the screen. I assumed the LVDS connector needed to be reseated, so I opened it up and did so. After that, I got a much wider, vertical black line about 1/3 from the left edge of the screen. Yikes.

I replaced the LVDS cable, hoping that was the issue. It wasn't.

My question - is this an issue with the logic board connector or the LCD?

Ouch! Not good ;-{

One of the flex cables is breaking down that connects the LCD to the logic board on the back the display assembly.

At the bottom of the display the metal cover covers this logic board. I suspect the tool you used was too long or the display was over stressed, breaking the ribbon cables connection on the back of the LCD. Here's an image: Back side of the display assembly on a 5K iMac.

Sadly, it's time for a new display

To confirm this, hook it up to an external monitor.

@danj Thanks for letting me down gently - but I'd already accepted the damage was done. I was sure the issue was the LVDS connector on the logic board - and hence the only fix was a new logic board! $500 for a new display is a lot better news than $1000 for a new logic board :)

I'm guessing there's no way to repair just the cable / board on the display?

@mayer - I should have mentioned - the image is clean on an external display. Thats part of why I suspected a broken LVDS connector, because that wouldn't shown up on an external display but would (I suspected) cause the orderly vertical line I saw.

Thanks again!
