Front glass panel replacement.

My brother dropped his iPod, getting the infamous spider cracks on the front. It seems to still work, because I can partly "Slide to Unlock", but the glass itself is basically ruined, with bits missing and everything.

Basically, I want to know what would be needed to replace the glass. I found a part on Amazon, but despite owning iDevices for years, I've never had to repair one so I have no idea what I'm actually looking for.

If this will do the job, I'd be over the moon, but the fact that the 4th Gen has a higher resolution screen, and presumably a higher resolution touch sensor thingymajigger, I wasn't sure. Any help would be great!

just wanted to add something that might help when buying parts online. Only get parts that are OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) because lots of parts are really cheap and i had to learn that the hard way. So when searching for parts include OEM or you might be buying cheap parts or just plain rip offs. Just wanted to warn people because i have had problems with that before on amazon.

Sorry to hear about his iPod. Unfortunately, you can't use any previous generation screens for your 4th generation iPod touch. It uses the same type of display as the iPhone 4 (not the exact same part, though), so the glass, digitizer, and LCD are all one inseparable piece.

If you find the part somewhere, all you would have to do is find a decent disassembly or repair guide (our teardown might provide a good starting point). As you can see from step 15 there, you have to remove the entire logic board before you can take out the display assembly.

Update

Since posting this we have created a front panel replacement guide for the 4th Gen. iPod Touch. This instructions will be much more helpful than the Teardown. Unfortunately, we still don't sell the part, but we do sell the necessary tools.

Thanks David. My parents have decided to go get it fixed after I re-read the teardown to find out that you need to replace the LCD too. It's a shame really, I was really looking forward to trying to repair my first iPod. Ah well, at least he'll have a working iPod.

So, Dave Hodson, you mentioned that the digitizer touch screen/ LCD is one part. Are you saying that if the touch screen on the itouch 4th gen is cracked, you cant just buy a new touch screen with the glass digitizer. For example, its not like a 3g/3gs where you can buy seperate parts if you were fixing either the touch screen or LCD screen? I think Im wording that correctly. I'm more so trying to ask if the touch screen glass and lcd screens are bonded perminently together so that if you just want to fix the glass, theyre being replaced at the same time, whether the lcd is damaged or not.

- de

Also, does the same thing go for the iphone 4?

- de

The glass and the LCD cannot be replaced individually as they are inseparable and attempts to separate them are pretty much a waste of money and time.

- de

I am very sorry I never saw your question, Athena. Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. Even if you only break one of the pieces, you must replace the entire display assembly. Companies on Ebay trying to sell you just the glass or just the LCD are ripping you off. Unfortunately, a reliable replacement part for either (we do sell the iPhone 4 part) will probably cost you quite a bit, since you're replacing everything.

Also, as you will find, there are no suppliers out there that are selling the front panel/LCD assembly with the home button installed. The home button is not easily replaced as it is unlike previous models and is "fused" to the front panel. Has anyone found a method to remove the home button from the damaged panel and put it onto the replacement panel??

"The home button isn't fused to the panel. I've cracked the panel and got the home button removed with the rubber around it. I just had to remove some glass splinters which were still attached but it's easy to remove from the panel and to re-use it with rubber glue on your new screen.

Can I assemble my iPod touch 4g digitizer?

- de

Just an FYI I have a repair center on ebay and you can buy just a digitizer and just an lcd to repair your 4th gen ipod touch. only thing is you have to line them up yourself and just takes a little more time and effort. We do it all the time because it is much cheaper to purchase.

HEY I keep watching repair vids, and reading guides and some mention an adhesive, 1 is that the only thing keeping the display assembly in place? and 2 if 1 is true then where can I obtain some of this adhesive?

EDIT: James I know that it is adhered together!!! I KNOW

also I KNOW where to get the proper adhesive stickers to "glue" the screen/digitizer assembly to the bod

Yes, the screen assembly is glued to the device!

Here are the stickers to adhere the assembly to the actual body/emi shield of the ipod touch http://cgi.ebay.com/iPhone-3G-3GS-4-4G-i...

I bought a front glass only and the company I bought it from (iRepair) had no instructions or warnings on the replacements. I am pretty good at small repairs and have done Apple hard drives on early macbooks.

The glass and digitizer are not separable! I used a quality heat gun and the amount of heat to soften that much adhesive is excessive. The perimeter adhesive was no problem as it is a thin line.

I do not believe that the glass only can be done on a Gen4 touch.

No first call apple then see if u have a warranty even though my iPod screen is cracked and I called and they won't fix that because they don't have workers who fix screen so they say u need to pay 99$ which I'm not paying for. Do my best option is to buy a digitizer which is that glass that is cracked and they cost around like 15$ up to 45$ but they also have this upgrade for the screen that like the iPod 5 screen and its a lot better than the other display which was for iPod 4g but my iPod has the white front when I get a new screen it's gone be read because they have many different colors but yea first have a chat with apple and if there no help I would buy my own screen and I would fix it or have a person who knows how to. I cracked my iPod screen yesterday and apple ain't do nothin about it so just see what they say to u an let me know my number is 317-565-7693 so yea have any question let me know what's on your mind god bless and have a great day

My answer is No, you can not separate them. If you do a search on here that are those that say yes, but the success rate is at best marginal. I would either send the part back and get a new one, or get a more reliable supplier.

Check connections on all your ribbon cables. I've repaired iphones and know what if you don't seat the cables properly they can come apart during assembly.

Sure. As long as the frame is not dented. You need a (almost) perfect fit to get the new glass/screen to fit in there since the housing is the frame. If the frame is dented you can imagine the glass will not fit.

So if i get on ebay a digitizer and an lcd screen separated still can glue them together and replace it? I just got the digitizer to find out it can not be separated from screen the wrong way and I`m wondering if I should just order the lcd screen and attach it to digitizer. please help

I would not bother to try that. Save your time and buy a complete part with the digitizer and LCD together.
