Have you checked the the volume has not been muted or that it is turned too low?

Go to :

Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Adjust System Volume

Have you checked in 'Device Manager' for the status of the audio controller?

(to easy access Device Manager in Win10 press the Win key and the x key together, a box will appear on the left of the screen, find and click on the Device Manager link)

Go to:

Start > Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Device Manager, scroll down to Sound Video and Game Controllers, click on + sign to expand.

If there is a red cross next to the Audio controller listed, right click on it and click enable in the window that appears. Then go back and see if your sound works.

If there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the Audio controller, right click on it and select Properties in the window that opens. Check what is written in the Device Status box in the middle of the General tab that appears. It will give information as to what is the problem with the Audio controller.

Try clicking on the Driver tab, Update Driver then click on the Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software option to see if updating the audio drivers will solve your problem.

If none of the above resolves your problem please supply information regarding the exact model number of your laptop and the Operating System that is installed (Vista, Win7,8.1, 10) for further assistance.

Since last Win-10 update in 2023, this "solved problem" is again not solved.

1. The " Sound Video and Game Controllers" no longer has the stated tabs.

2. Instead, they are found at the top of the list of Device Manager named "Audio inputs and outputs."

There I found that (since the last time I checked, maybe years ago) the NAME of the device has been CHANGED: from the original generic name to the BRAND NAME has been added.

Since windows made that change

= the audio no longer works ... and likely never will (this is a common ploy MS uses to force their customers to buy the newest version of Windows, remember VISTA when their next OpSys "Windows 7" was delayed, hence they used "Vista" — a Frankensteined version of XP/SP3 and Win7 to try out their newer-but-unavailable-for-three-more-years customers as guinea pigs?

It looks to me as MS is already starting their old tricks; using "updates" to ruin the system = thereby FORCING their customers into buying VISTA for the next few years.

... my opinion.
