Microphone could be damaged?

In my new Samsung Galaxy s7 edge I put by mistake the pin for the hole of the storage of the SIM card instead of there to the hole of the microphone who is near .

Do you believe I have damaged the microphone ? How can I realize it ?

Update (05/01/2016)

Anybody could commend about the waterproof situation after that action mentioned above ?

Any help to be informed about possible damage and also water protection ?

It is very possible to have damage the mic. However, if you were gentle then you may not have. A quick test for your mic would be a phone call or voice commands(if no one can hear you then its broken, or if the commands dont work). If everything seems clear then no worries, if not then it is safe to assume damage was done.

السلام عليكم انا عندي مشكلة في جالكسي اس 7 ايدج الجهاز مقاوم للماء وهذا معروف لكن انا وضعته في الماء ثم لم يعد يشتغل ابدا اتمنى الرد

Which mic do you mean guys? Galaxy S7 has two mics: on the top, and on the bottom...What if the try opening tool is inserted into the mic located on the phone's bottom? Can this damage the bottom mic and/or damage the water seal?

- de

According to a post made by user Jimmy, the galaxy S7 mics and water resistant mesh is parallel to the hole, such that inserting a pin will go next to that Mic but not penetrate it if straight down.

Not answered is if there's anything under it that the pin will come in contact with.

You did not damage the microphone. Both the holes for both of the mics face downwards for the actual mics themselves. There is one on the I/O board where the USB is, this one is for when you have the phone up to your ear talking on the phone. The mic at the top is located on the board itself and is for the loudspeaker function such as speakerphone. If you want to test to see if the mic works then simply type in your keypad *#0283# and this will take you to an audio test screen, from there click the second one down from the top, it should say something like "SPK mic" or "2nd mic", then just speak into it and if you hear yourself then it works.

As for the water resistance, I highly doubt that you damaged any water water resistance. Both of these mics have the same setup, under the mic holes is a rubber grommet and literally all but flush with the holes with the mics themselves is the water resistant mesh. That being said, both of meshes are parallel with the phone. They aren't where the outside hole is, but in the hole and upwards if that makes sense. Just to make sure it does, when you stuck the SIM ejector in, it went in parallel with the mesh rather than into the mesh. So you're good.

I know that this was a while ago, but, can you elaborate on where the mic and the mesh is in the hole? I don't quite understand what you meant by "Both the holes for both of the mics face downwards for the actual mics themselves" and "all but flush with the holes with the mics themselves is the water resistant mesh. That being said, both of meshes are parallel with the phone. They aren't where the outside hole is, but in the hole and upward". Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

@Micah Simmons

Basically what I mean was if a sim ejector was poked into the hole that you see on the outside of the phone that no damage would be done to the microphone or the water resistant mesh.

That link will take you to a picture, if you look at the top of the inside, right next to the black tape to the right is a little white/grey grommet. This grommet holds the mesh (the white part in the middle of the grommet). The actual hole of the mic itself is facing towards that mesh. So if you stick a sim ejector in the top of the housing, it will just go in parallel to the mesh and not into the mics hole.

Well I think every phone has their own voice record application that records from bottom microphone.

thanks my friend. what about the wather resistance ? do you believe that a membrane could be cutted ?

- de

Probably compromised. It happened to me, too and I really felt the moment I penetrated something rubbery. I'd love to see iFixit comment on this issue.

Used the Sim ejector end to clear out both mic holes. Worked like a charm! Thank you so much!!

What's the story on this and the S8, S8+, and the Note 8? Ok for sim popper/paperclip to accidentally go through the top Mic port without damage to these phones mics or water resistance or not?

I've asked Samsung, tech repair of different companies etc. Most that say something really off-the-cuff the hand say either that the mic and/or waterproofing is damaged or that it needs to be sent in for evaluation to ensure that the water resistance still working as the mic test can be performed by the user. However this in the repair people that actually responded that they took apart the phones and inserted pins down the back of them while looking at this frame said that it would be almost impossible to damage the mic or the sick rubber gaskets. There is no mention about mesh. However nobody has provided pictures to prove one way or the other. To me it would be a very stupid and ignorant design on Samsung's part to put a hole up top that could be damaged by the same pin that could be fit in the other hole next to it, as part of engineering is expecting people to do dumb things, and ensuring that such things do not cause repair problems that could easily have been avoided. Yet one way or the other there is no definitive proof as of yet. Pick your poison.

I did the same thing.

Fortunately, mic seems to be pretty fine.

But I can't deny I felt something when poked and damaged something.

Shake(or swing) your phone, then you will hear something rolling(rattling) inside your phone.

Have no idea what it really is.

Check to see if it works, it probably does. You have probably obliterated any waterproofing though.

The mic works fine (at least I do not see any issues so far...). As I see it's easy to be confused with the tray opening hole and mic hole....Samsung could easy eliminate this problem by modifying the opening tool tip's shape...I am not going to test the waterproofing, and I am very accurate with the phone, so even the water seal is damaged it's not a real issue for me. I worried mostly about how the mic works...

Are all phones and tablet phones mics same structure? I did the same mistake by poking the wrong hole to my new Huawei Mediapad M3 and I felt so bad. So far still no any mic functioning issue yet. Just still have a lot of doubts and worries. Can anyone solve my doubts?

I had this same problem and I have a question, is the top mic suposed to be more quiet than the bottom mic or it could be possible that I just damaged it?

You have to get recording software or use a microphone test to determine if the top like is actually quieter or if it's turned off and the bottom like for both mics are turned on with it in a different mode. If you can download a stereo program that records voice than likely you can test out each mic, or better yet there's a code for Samsung phones to test the mic and one of them is specifically for the top Mic, and if you use this test then the audio should be loud and clear when it echoes back the audio input.

I done my test on my Samsung s10. I used the audio test screen after typing the # then the numbers. I tested on the 2nd one down. I could hear my voice back but it was very quiet and I could hardly make out what it was saying. I only really knew what it was saying sometimes because I'd just spoke into it. Is my mic broken. I've got a voice recorder on the phone and its clear and I have no problems with calls. This could mean my bottom mic is good though. I really don't know. Help anyone?

I took my phone into the Samsung store where they have professionals there to do all the checks and fix your phone. I took it in and they told me that they were going to do a full check up and fix everything and to come back in a couple of hours. When I went back they said everything was fixed and the phone was fine now. When I got it home the mic was still not working and all I had done was get my phone wiped clean. Useless. All that messing around by so called professionals and all I got was a phone that was still faulty and I got all my stuff wiped off my phone for nothing. Some professionals! Really disappointed with Samsung.
