Preguntas 201 Ver todo

Is my power supply broken?

I received this iMac in its current broken state.

Pressing the power button, the white power light turns on, a CD in the optical drive spins, and the fans whir as well (I can't hear the hard disk, but it's probably just masked by all the other noises).

The display shows nothing.

Trying to eject the cd by holding the mouse down doesn't work and neither does starting the computer in target disk mode. Reseting the SMC (removing power cord, holding power for five seconds, plugging cord back in and powering up) doesn't do anything.

*Update* My model (Early 2006) doesn't have diagnostic lights present in many other versions.

Thank you very much,

-Peter

According to the link above, my model (early 2006 iMac) does not have the diagnostic LEDs they used to diagnose the problem. This links to the machine we have http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/im...

Hello Peter, I'm sorry you can't take advantage of the diagnostic LEDs. At this point all I can suggest is trying an external monitor to see if you get any video. If you don't and you can get to a genius bar see if they will diagnose it for you and then we can help you with parts replacement. If you can't do that and no video on the external monitor I would try replacing the power supply first then the logic board. I am reluctant to suggest this because if you are not in the business or in the habit of rebuilding clunkers for kids (like me) you probably don't have parts laying around and this could get expensive. Good luck with your project. Ralph

Thanks for your advice! I will probably take the computer to the Apple store, and replace the power supply myself (if they confirm that's what's broken). If the problem is the logic board, I may not be able to justify the cost.
