My headphones don't work when I plug it into the jack?

My headphones work fine when I'm using them on my phone but for some reason they don't work when I plug it into my computer. How do I fix this?

Alyssa Kristedja. Make sure that the drivers for your audio card are properly installed. Also, and I know this sounds stupid, but make sure that your headphones are properly plugged in to the headphone jack, not the mic etc. If that still won't work, check the bios to make sure that your audio card is properly initialized.

Assuming your headphones do in fact work, it might be that the device isn't recognizing them or just overrides them. If this is the case then you can manually connect and set your headphones as default through these steps..

For Windows 8 and 10 move your mouse to the top right of your screen and then straight down to bring up the charms sidebar.

a. Click settings

b. Click Control Panel.

c. Go to Hardware and Sound.

d. Click on Sound.

e. Right click your headphones in the pop-up window

f. Click connect

Hopefully this will set your headphones as the primary playback device. If this fails see the troubleshooting page mentioned above.

FOR MACBOOK AIR-

Im so happy that i figured this out

It might not be 100% accurate

1) Go to settings

2) Click Sound

3) Click output

4)plug your earbuds in

5) Click headphone port

6) slide the balance bar around, and it should work

(if you take your headphones out and it doesn’t make noise, slide the bar around again)

Hope this helped

This also works for Microsoft. Instead of clicking on sound, type in the search bar "sound" and click on the tab that says sound settings.

I have the same problem, everytime I plug in my headphones it says they aren’t plugged in, and these are brand new. Although, I tried restarting my Dell and now my headphones are working. I’m assuming you have to restart your computer every time you plug in your headphones to work, hopefully this works for you guys too

I'm having the same problem. I have a Dell laptop and so I've been taking with the reps. They gave me links to reinstall and I'm still having the same problem. The install links I got were: chip set, bios and the audio driver. I tried different headphones with no luck. I've looked online for a fix. One actually worked but it was only temporary. I'm wondering if my bluetooth devices are part of the problem even though they were never an issue before. I've never had this problem before and this one is a complete mystery. Even the reps at Dell are stumped. Their solution is to do a mail-in service.

An answer that worked for me.

Go to Device Manager

Double Click on Sound, Video, and Game Controllers

In the dropdown menu, click on a device starting with Realtek.

Right click the device and click Uninstall.

This will trigger you to reboot your computer.

Click on OK.

While your PC is booting back up, plug in your headphones immediately.

After restarting, they should work.

Thank You very much Joshua I was trying to figure out for a half an hour why when I plugged in my headphones I was receiving no sound? This was after I used a wired mic in the same port.
